Subject: Dont tell your daughter she's pretty
I read this article the other day about the dangers of putting too much emphasis on your daughters appearance. Apparantly it starts early when we dress them in cute outfits and tell them how pretty they are. This makes them think that this is important to how others percieve them and makes them too image conscious as teens and young adults. It did make me laugh a little, but I can see the point and maybe a bit of balance is needed and their smarts praised too.

However, my two year old says "No I am *name*"!!! when I ask "Are you gorgeous?" I guess I don't need to worry.

Sounds like your daughter has the right attitude, LOL! I can only speak from my own experience, i. e. my mum always saw my sister and me as some kind of competition, and may have TOLD us we looked pretty at times, but never helped us to make the best of our looks, so we're still wandering round with this huge inferiority complex and not much of a dress sense today. All in good measure, I would say - as long as you keep a good balance between "prettiness" and your daughter's other emerging interests, and encourage her own interests, it'll be fine!

I don't think there's any harm. If my daughter looks lovely, I tell her so, just as I would praise her in any other area - for example, for good behaviour or doing something well at school.

This. As long as she is getting praise for other important things then I don't see the problem.

I'd hate for my daughter to grow up thinking she was ugly because mummy never told her how pretty she was, in the same way I'd hate for her to think she was stupid because noone ever said how clever she is

I'm with aelskar, I'm sure that not saying 'your pretty' could also have some damaging effect - it is about finding the balance.
