Subject: Career Progression
Im a 24 yr old sales mgr and on the fast track into senior management as my output is good and I get on with customers well... only problem is i'm underpaid due to my lack of experience but expected to do the same job as "the boys" who earn double and triple my salary (I'm on £30k so you can imagine my frustration!!)... Now I know this wont last forever... and its purely a matter of time... but friends in the trade have told me to get out of my current company as they wont give me the salary hike I deserve (£10k+), as another company would.

But here's the kicker... I am very confident at what I do... but the thought of going to another company where I dont know the techniques, history, plan, people terrifies me and makes me think im not as good as I think I am...

So, what do you think?? Do I stick it out here for a bit and see if they reward me for my actual output - or do I go somewhere else where they give me £££'s as a matter of blind faith and hope im up to it???

Unfortunately these days you have to move around to make more money. If your current company knows you are comfortable where you are then they wont bother giving you a raise.

It really comes down to what makes you happy. If you're already in a good position then maybe just wait it out. On the other hand, if you want/need the money it may be best to move.

If I were you I would at least put some feelers out and see what other companies would offer you.

If you do move, try to research the company as much as possible - perhaps you can ask to shadow someone before you start?

Have you spoken to your current company about it? If you give them strong reasons why your worth more then they might give you that raise.

Hi CharlotteRo,
Thanks for your suggestion.
I'm still here and im battling it out... have begun discussions about it and the response is split - I do deserve some recognition of my growth but the amount is measly.
Re: feelers... I have 2 companies pitching for me... but am getting cold feet thinking I cant do it.
Gonna have to just suck it up and see what comes. You're right, I might only be able to progress with a move... scary time ahead but will keep you posted xx
