Subject: Homework rant!!!
Hi there, does anyone else with primary school children feel as strongly as me about how they shouldn't be bogged down with homework at this age?

My 6 and 10 year old both need lots of support from me - so much so, that I often feel like putting the housepoints up on my own kitchen wall when they receive them!

I just feel that at this age, it really just becomes a battle and ends up making us all miserable every weekend. Whereas my 12 year old gets on with hers independently and I don't really hear much fuss from her.

I did a bit of a google and it seems that there is no evidence that homework does actually improve learning.

Any opinions? (or shoulders to cry on please?!!!)

I agree at that age homework is ridiculous. I think that if kids are expected to pay attention all day and then dont get down time at home, it will just become a battle for you. At 12 yrs old, fair enough, it does serve as a tool to build independent study skills that are expected a higher ed and allows kids to demonstrate that they can apply what they learn in the classroom. I never remember getting homework other than reading and spellings before I hit senior school, so things have obviously changed, not necessarily for the better.

I agree. My 7 yr old struggles with her writing so probably needs the practice but I think homework only serves to put her off since she is so tired by the end of the day. We had a right battle last night about it.
