Hi everyone

I'm taking driving lessons on a manual car. I've had 23 hours so far and don't have access to practice inbetween. I am with a very experienced instructor. She says I'm doing well and I feel I am getting to grips with the clutch etc. We go out in very busy traffic. However, I haven't done any reversing or hill starts yet and am just wondering if she is getting me completely comfortable with driving before going onto other things or if I should be doing manoeuvres by now. I'd appreciate any thoughts you have on this.

Hmmm, after 23 hours I'd have expected you to be doing a fair bit of reversing by now... I'd been doing a lot of hill starts by 23 hours too, but that's partially because my usual route had a steep hill and a set of traffic lights so that was unavoidable, it might not be as frequent for others.

But the reversing... I really do think you should have at least started, and ideally should probably be pretty comfortable with it by then. Have you asked your instructor when you'll be starting on that?

Many thanks for your reply. It's really helpful. I haven't mentioned it to her yet. She is very good at instruction but I must admit I have been getting very disappointed that she hasn't touched on reversing or hill starts. I think I will give it 25. Think I've just had number 24, then I'll either mention it or think about changing.

I was doing hill starts quite early, but I had an instructor who liked to take me out of my comfort zone. I think I was onto manoeuvres after 23hours. I don't remember ever doing much reversing aside from the manoeuvres though...

As the others have said, just talk to her. She may have a good reason for not teaching you these things yet.
