Subject: Knitting / Crocheting?
Does anyone else enjoy a sneaky (or not so sneaky!) bit of knitting or crocheting? I can't knit to save my life but I love crocheting and it's really turning into my new addiction. I love that if I want to make something, I can look up a pattern and start making it rather than hunting it down in the shop.

Please tell me I'm not alone! I'd love to hear what other projects and patterns people're working on!

Ever since Harry Hill did the knitted character X-Factor style contest on TV Burp I've been trying to help my daughter knit a flipping monkey! (And yes, I think that was as far back as last November eek)

I'd love to be able to make my own clothes as I know exactly what I'd like to wear but can never find the perfect item in the shops!

Good luck with the knitting and crocheting though Aestivalis! Huge admiration

Has your daughter made much progress on her knitted monkey? I'm really impressed she's trying, it's oddly satisfying isn't it? (Well, until it starts putting up a fight, which is about the time it seems to end up in some dark corner somewhere... )

Have you considered taking up crochet or knitting more (beyond the monkey!) yourself?

Well she still hasn't finished the monkey - about 2/3 of the way there, but it keeps getting stuffed to the back of the cupboard and forgotten about :P

I'd love to do something more myself as I guess then I'd be a good role model right?! But at the moment it's just a case of finding the time... it's on my list of things to do!

Do you find crocheting easier than knitting? And I'd love to hear about what you've made so far.

I used to knit a lot when I was younger but then somehow stopped, tried to get back into it a couple of years ago but what I produced somehow didn't quite fit, so didn't pursue it. But agree it's nice and can be relaxing and so rewarding when you make something nice!

May dig out my needles again )

My nan taught me to crochet when I was very young. She died 2 years ago and I was lucky enough to inherit her crochet needles, yarns and patterns. Ive recently picked up a needle and starting crocheting a blanket for my best friends baby thats due in a few weeks. I find it incredibly relaxing and knowing Im the only grandchild to carry on my nans love of crocheting makes me very proud.

SunnyD, I know a lot of people who absolutely swear by a bit of knitting or crocheting in front of the TV before bed! Personally I get a bit absorbed in what I'm doing and stop listening to the TV, but it's a nice way to unwind after the day. As to which I find easier... for me, it's definitely crocheting - knitting just gets me tied in knots! - but the friend who initially helped me get started says she can only knit and that crochet is beyond her (but she does the most stunning knitting so I suspect she's not too bothered ). I know others who do beautiful work in both, so I think it depends on just personal preferences and how much practice you put in.

As to your daughter's monkey, not long now right?

Lynndzee, I say go for it!

Charrowell, it's so lovely that you're carrying on what she taught you with her tools, I'm sure she'd be so proud of you. And congratulations to your friend too! I think it's a wonderful use of your nan's things.

I have recently got into knitting! I find it very therapuetic and relaxing. I'm just practicing at the moment the knit stitch and not making anything in particula,r just doing row after row trying to get my technique right. I really love it. It is a little slow moving though.

Is crochet-ing easier/faster than knitting?

Just recently picked up knitting needles again. Could only do the knit stich as a child but with all the excellent 'how to' vids on youtube I'm hoping I can master the purl and then hopefully a few more exciting stitches. Have bought myself a crochet hook too, but one step at a time.

This is going to sound silly, but I broke my right arm when I was a child, and when I overdo certain movements I get terrible pain in my wrist and elbow, which is what happened when I restarted the knitting, accompanied by tingling and numbness. So I'm taking it a little slowly now!

I'm 31. My mate at work is 24 and loves crochet, again taught by her gran. Our older colleagues like playing games on their iphones and think we're tragic. Their loss!

Persephone, crochet does go a lot faster than knitting, yep. As to easier, well... I think it depends on the person. I find it easier, but some of my friends find knitting much easier, I think it's variable.

Bernard_Black, are the YouTube videos any good? Are there any in particular? I've just picked up my own knitting needles again (I'm really not good at it...) and one of my friends kindly - and patiently! - taught me to knit and purl, but at the minute I think I'm a bit lost beyond scarves...

It doesn't sound silly at all though - I'd think taking it slow is the best thing to do if it's hurting. I guess it might be using different muscles to usual on top of aggravating any old injuries.

*lol* I'm 27, my friend is in her 30s - our older friends are the same as yours and love their new gadgets! As you say, their loss.
