Subject: Nursery/Playschool advice
My friend from work is really struggling coping with work and family due to the hours she works. She works 2 nightshifts a week as a staff nurse. Work rota's the shifts together so won't allow her to split them which she feels would be more managable. When she finishes her 1st shift ideally she should be sleeping all day then off to work at night again, this isn't the case. She has a valuable adhoc place for her son which is about 1h15min round trip from her home, no where nearer does this. She also has him in playschool 2 1/2 hrs every morning near by. The problem is that she gets home from work, helps get him ready for nursery, has asleep for about 1 1/2 hrs, picks up her son, gives him lunch and takes him to his adhoc nursery in the afternoon, then home again for another short sleep. So really she is luck if she gets 4hrs sleep between shifts. I'm concerned about this because she is my friend and also that I will be in the same situation when my daughter is 3. Do you think it would be possible for her to take her child to the local playschool 4 times a week and the other day go to the adhoc nursery. Just concerned that the playschool would withdraw the place for her child if he is continually missing playschool every week.

I know this is a bit confusing and long winded but not the easiest situation to explain. I'd be grateful for any advice or suggestions

Would they withdraw the place if she paid anyway? The situation sounds horrendous...how does she manage to stay awake at work?

Sorry, just realised this was posted two months ago. Has she got anything sorted out? whatever happened to the community spirit on Handbag, where people actually replied to posts, gave advice, sympathy, or had a laugh?

Thanks for replying, yes I was disappointed not to get any replies on this one
My friend ended up beng signed of work for about 8 wks and has been started on antidepressants too although I see this as only a bandaid to the situation. Her work is being a bit more helpful and splitting het nights now wlthough she had an appraisal recently and was given a hard time about it
The situation with the nursery remain the same. Should have said the playgroup place is a free place (2.5hrs daily) so thoant is why I was concerned that it would be frowned upon that her son would miss a day every week. I have advised her to look inot it more but I really don't think she has.

There's not enough people left here sadly.. which is why it got missed.

It sounds like a horrible situation.. at first I though you were saying that every day was like this What about the bairns dad.. is he in the picture.. or any other family that could help out on the days that your friend really should be getting some sleep?
