Patrick Swayze has died aged 57, it has been confirmed by his publicist. The Dirty Dancing star had been battling a virulent form of pancreatic cancer since being diagnosed in January last year, and is said to have passed away peacefully with his family at his side last night. The actor had been planning to write his memoirs with wife of 34 years, Lisa Niemi. Swayze was diagnosed with advanced stage four of the disease 20 months ago. Pancreatic cancer is sometimes known as the silent killer as it is not usually diagnosed until the later stages, and has a five per cent survival rate.

Swayze famously starred in some of the most popular films of the ‘80s and ‘90s, and stole the hearts of women everywhere for his performances in romantic classics such as Dirty Dancing and Ghost. His career slowed in the mid ‘90s, with stints in rehab for alcohol addiction, before picking back up with roles in films such as Donnie Darko and later in FBI drama The Beast.
