Have your say on the gender pay gap here

Woman staring at pile of coinsYou probably don't need us to tell you that today is payday - but before you crack out the credit card, you might want to have a think about the fact that, as women, technically this is our last payday of the year.

The gender pay gap, which sees men paid on avergage 17.5 per cent more than women in the same roles, means that October 30th is, technically speaking, the last day of the year you will be paid for.

In some areas and industries such as the city in London, the pay gap is as high as 32 per cent, meaning women will be working for free for several months of the year compared to their male colleagues.

The main argument supporting men being paid more than women is the fact that women take time off to have children and often decide to work part-time to take care of their children later in life. Times journalists Tad Safran and Molly Watson debated the issue with Tad arguing the point that training women for a job is a waste of money as they will only work for a decade compared with men who will work until they retire. Tad also follows this up with the fact that women save 30 per cent less of their salary compared with men - the reason? According to Tad it’s because women rely on men to pay the bills.

What do you think? Is it fair that women are still being paid so much less than men?
