Rachel McAdams, Scarlett Johansson, Penelope Cruz and Naomi Watts are just a few of the stars that have featured in Woody Allen's movies, and he's revealed just how he casts the female actresses.
He says it's shyness that leads him to incredibly short meetings with the actresses before filming starts, Penelope Cruz told W magazine:
"Woody and I had a meeting in New York for 40 seconds, and when I left, the people who worked in his office said, 'Oh - you have been there for a very long time."
The director spoke to the magazine too, telling them exactly what he looks for in those few seconds. He revealed he's just making sure they haven't put on weight or had facial surgery, and doesn't even really want to talk to them. Charming.
He explained:
"Casting is so awkward.
"I’m too shy to meet them. I have the women come in and I don’t let them sit down. I make up some questions, but I couldn’t care less about chatting.
"I only see them to make sure that they haven’t gained 200 pounds or had five face jobs. I want to see that the woman I saw on the DVD is still intact."
Hopefully he actually talks to them when they're on set…
