Wicked life after Busted for Matt Willis
The new cast of Wicked put on their first performance last night at the Victoria Apollo theatre, with a line-up that included former Busted singer Matt Willis as lead man Fiyero, and musical stars Rachel Tucker and Gina Beck as Elphaba and Glinda, the wicked and good witches, respectively. With newly-fanciable McFly (theyre definitely better looking than they used to be, right?) in the audience, it was a night of reminiscing about early 2000s school girl crushes, and realising that theyre actually more acceptable now...
The two lead starlets shone in their witchy roles, with Rachel Tuckers Elphaba all doom, gloom and dead-pan delivery, and Gina Becks Glinda as a really frighteningly saccharine reincarnation of Marilyn Monroe. We can also confirm that their costumes were amazing in particular Glinda, with her Cinderella style ball dresses and 50s style white skirt suit (with matching hand-held bag, of course). Also, not bad singers.
For us and the audience though, it was Matt Willis turn as dandy-turned-softie Fiyero which stole the show. From the moment he was carted on stage in his oversized sunglasses and skin-tight breeches, with muscular arms and tattoo sleeves on show (breathe) we fell hook, line and sinker for this reformed pop star. His exaggerated slow spins, his energetic dancing, and his penchant for wicked witch Elphaba rather than cutesy Glinda meant we were watching his every move. And we always thought Charlie was the fit one.
So we urge you to go see Wicked, not only is it a smash hit musical for a lot of very good reasons (excellent story, songs and cast) but it also stars one of our favourite rediscovered pop stars.
