The handbag factor

This weekend saw a spooktacular X Factor, with scary outfits, flared tempers, and heaps of drama, here’s our take on all the shenanigans.

First, let’s take a look at the contestants’ performances:

Belle Amie began their set inside four coffins before being voted off in favour of Katie on Sunday night after the sing-off went to deadlock. We weren’t wholly fussed about who actually got the boot, because, well, we haven’t grown that close to either act. Belle Amie, because they’re four pretty girls and seem to argue over the smallest thing and Katie because, well, she’s just so unlikeable. We also wonder how their song, Venus, had anything to do with the Halloween theme. Really.

And Louis had the same question about boy band One Direction’s choice of Total Eclipse Of The Heart, Bonnie Tyler’s decidedly non-spooky 80s power ballad. Only for Simon to point out that it shares a bit of its title with a Twilight film, so it’s, you know, a bit about vampires, duh.

Matt Cardle covered Leona Lewis’ Bleeding Love and while we loved the performance, we’re getting a bit bored and weren’t crazy about the song choice. We also really wish Dannii would stop popping her neck like she’s from some bad American teen movie. You’re a mum, think about the embarrassment your children will face when they’re in school!

Aiden Grimshaw murdered Michael Jackson’s thriller with the same intensity that we’ve come to expect from the boy from Blackpool. Fitting for a show about ghosts and ghoulies, as he’s starting to resemble a serial killer.

Cher Lloyd’s was the star-making performance of the night, and we couldn’t help agree with Simon’s sentiments that unlike Louis, he didn’t think it was the performance of the show, but quite possibly the performance of the whole season. The troubled-soul shed tears as she finished her rendition of Shakespeare’s Sister’s Stay, which we thought was brilliant.

But, we think the X Factor dark horse may just be Rebecca Ferguson. So far she’s managed to stay under the radar; giving brilliant performances but not taking centre stage. Boy, did she deliver this week. Singing Wicked Game by Chris Isaak, Rebecca really stood out. Definitely one to watch.

And Wagner, we’re not even going to grace with a comment. We’re still not sure why he’s in the competition.

Now, on to the fashion:

Dannii definitely won in the style stakes this week, as Cheryl seemed to misunderstand the Halloween theme and instead came out looking like a lady of the night both evenings. Opting for a mesh-topped dress with white leather bust and black skirt on Saturday night, and a purple ruffled top with a dusky-blancmange type skirt on Sunday, Cheryl was trumped by Dannii who wore a ridiculous-looking cherry-red ruffled dress on Saturday but redeemed herself on Sunday in a one-shouldered black-sequined outfit.

What did you think?

X Factor feud:

The feud between the judges seemed to have cooled this week, possibly because they were putting on a united front against Sunday’s performer Jay Kay from Jamiroquai. Dannii and Cheryl even refused to applaud him following his comments in The Sun earlier in the week. You can read more about that here. Petty? Of course. Awkward? Definitely. Entertaining? You betcha. We especially loved Dermot O’Leary for highlighting the icy reception by declaring, “We’re all friends here.” Kind of reminded us of something our Dad would have done when we fell out with friends back in the day.
