It's meant to be a cooler version of the Brit Awards, but the argument goes that even the NME Awards (previously called the 'Brats') get more and more mainstream each year. Still, the event hasn't entirely shaken off its rock 'n' roll reputation - there's always a bit of gossip going on backstage (last year, a bust up between Lily Allen and Courtney Love over a Chanel dress!). In the meantime, though, the nominations have been announced, with a few surprises - as well as more predictable choices (Lady Gaga for best and worst dressed, for instance).

The winners will be announced at the O2 Academy Brixton on February 23.
