Lady GaGa has said she experienced a "traumatic event" during her adolescence, but has refused to elaborate on it because it was "so horrible."

The 24-year-old Born This Way singer gave an open and canid interview with music journalist Neil Strauss, who has included intimate extracts of their conversation in his new book Everyone Loves You When You Are Dead.

The author spoke exclusively with US website RadarOnline.com, explaining, "I asked her if she'd been through a traumatic experience when she was younger and she said yes, that it was when she was in New York and it was so terrible that she'd blocked it out.

"She said it was so horrible that she didn't want it in her younger fans' heads. I think she felt that if she opened up about herself, then it would define her and that's all anyone would ask about."

However, the star has also been quoted in the book as saying, "I didn't have a bad childhood. All of the things I went through were on my own quest for an artistic journey to f*** myself up like Warhol and Bowie and Mick, and just go for it.

"All of the trauma I caused to myself. Or it was caused by people that I met when being outrageous and irresponsible."

GaGa, who has also talked openly about her recreational drug use in the past, recently revealing she "smokes a lot of pot" while writing music and occasionally dabbles in cocaine a few times a year, also told the author, "Sometimes it freaks me out - or I should say it petrifies me - when I think about laying in my apartment (in New York) with bed bugs and roaches on the floor and mirrors with cocaine everywhere, and no will or interest in doing anything but making music and getting high.

"I've had such obstacles with drugs and rejection and people not believing in me. It's been a very long and continuous road that I love, but it's hard to just chalk it up to myself. I have to believe there's something greater than myself."

Meanwhile, the star has denied reports she is set to collaborate with Cliff Richard.

The 70-year-old singer had said recently, "I wouldn’t mind singing with Lady Gaga but she can’t wear any of those hats."

But the singer has since said that after working with Beyonce, collaborations are out of the question, for the time being at least.

In a recent radio interview, the star said, "I want to stand on my own two feet. I've already collaborated with my favourite female in the business. We'll see how I'm feeling when I'm wrapping up the album."
