Girl power

JK Rowling has come first in the National Magazine Company’s selection of the 100 most influential women in Britain. Following in a close second place is Victoria Beckham with Cheryl Cole in fifth. Rowling beat off fierce competition from the Queen, with NatMags Chief Executive Arnaud de Puyfontaine saying the Harry Potter Author was chosen for her “writing skills, tenacity to succeed and philanthropic nature.” As well as writing the world famous book series, Rowling recently donated £10million to set up a new multiple sclerosis research clinic in Edinburgh - where she wrote the first Potter books - after her mother died from the disease at the age of 45. The list was compiled by Natmags Editors to mark the centenary of the National Magazine Company and applauds British women whose actions have strongly influenced a generation or have influenced or initiated a groundbreaking change or shift in attitude amongst women.

Here’s the top 10:

1 JK Rowling

2 Victoria Beckham

3 Queen Elizabeth II

4 Shami Chakrabarti

5 Cheryl Cole

6 Samantha Cameron

7 Cath Kidston

8 Kate Moss

9 Dame Vivienne Westwood

10 Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson

Who would you have liked to see on this list? There’s a definite lack of female politicians but yet women are celebrated for being celebrities. What do you think it takes to be an influential woman? We want to know.
