Friends and Hollywood stars Joaquin Phoenix and Casey Affleck.

Casey Affleck has admitted his Joaquin Phoenix documentary was faked. I’m Still Here follows Phoenix’s public meltdown last year as he attempted to become a rapper. Although the authenticity of the film – which is released today - has been questioned, Affleck has previously claimed it wasn’t a hoax.

However, Casey has now come clean. "It's a terrific performance; it's the performance of his career. I never intended to trick anybody. The idea of a 'hoax' never entered my mind," he told the New York Times. "There were multiple takes, these are performances," he continued. "We wanted to create a space. You believe what’s happening is real."

Phoenix hit the headlines last year following a bizarre appearance on The Late Show with David Letterman when he chewed gum during his interview and appeared out of it. Affleck hadmitted that, although Letterman was not in on the joke, Phoenix was in character. Joaquin is due on the show again next week, and his friend has promised he will appear this time as himself.
