Gwyneth Paltrow's GOOP website is a love it or hate it kind of thing. While we appreciate some of the advice on it is genuinely useful, there's a lot of pretentious tosh on it as well, and not everybody needs to know where to buy the best quality wheatgrass. It also includes shopping tips, recipes, travel advice and more under the headings Make, Go, Get, Do, Be and See.
Having said that, she is trying to help people, which we can't help but admire, even though can be in a slightly condescending fashion. Unfortunately for Gwyneth, we're not the only ones who've got doubts as to the site's efficacy, and apparently she's had so much criticism she even considered shutting it down at one point (via Harper's Bazaar)
"There were a couple of times when I thought, 'I'm just gonna stop doing it. People are so mean to me. I don't want to do it'. But then I was like, 'Who cares what some lame person out there says?'"
GOOP originally came under attack several years ago, after Gwynnie connected shampoo with cancer:
"Foetuses, infants and toddlers are basically unable to metabolize toxins the way that adults are, and we are constantly filling our environments with chemicals that may or may not be safe.
"The research is troubling; the incidence of diseases in children such as asthma, cancer and autism have shot up exponentially and many children we all know and love have been diagnosed with developmental issues like ADHD
Hugh Penninghton of Aberdeen University was one of the many detractors:
"It does annoy me when celebrities use their position to spout nonsense. They have a perfect right to their views, even if they are loopy, but they do hold a position of influence. You may as well ask someone on the Underground,"
Don't worry Gwyneth, we're sure there'll always be an audience for your site.
