X Factor star James Arthur tried three times to pay £771.74 for a pile of caps, trainers and t-shirts in Footasylum at Teesside Shopping Park on Boxing Day and each time his card was declined.
We've all been there: it's almost the end of the month and you're playing debit card roulette in Tesco, hoping you've got the funds to pay for a prawn sandwich.
At least for us regular folk, if the worst comes to the worst, we can scuttle away with only the cashier knowing our shame... James isn't so lucky.
According to the Daily Mail, the singer made a phone call to find out whether money had been transferred to his account, before asking to speak to the manager. Lucky for James the store decided to let him take his shopping and return at a later date to settle his bill.
Unfortunately the 24 year old was also papped looking very red faced at the counter, fumbling for his mobile phone.
James had returned to his hometown for the holidays and spent Christmas Day in Saltburn with his family.
He is expected to reclaim the number one spot on the singles chart this Sunday, after he was beaten to the Christmas number one by the Justice Collective's charity cover of 'He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother'.
