Olympic heroes top the New Year Honours list

The New Year Honours list has been dominated by Olympic and Paralympic athletes and organisers.

To top off his amazing year winning the Tour de France, an Olympic Gold and Sports Personality of the Year, Bradley Wiggins is to be knighted as he led the list of London 2012 medallists being honoured.

Paralympic cyclist Sarah Storey is to become a dame after taking four golds and the most decorated sailor in history, Ben Ainslie, is also to be knighted.

Victoria Pendleton, Jessica Ennis, Laura Trott, Mo Farah and wheelchair athlete David Weir become CBEs, whilst Andy Murray is to get an OBE.

Sir Bradley Wiggins already has a CBE and said, 'I never ever imagined that I would ever become a knight so it's an incredible honour. But there's a slight element of disbelief and it will take a while to sink in.'

Lord Coe is becoming a Champion of Honour, a title given for service of national importance, however director Danny Boyle who oversaw the opening ceremony was surprisingly left off the list.

A Cabinet Office spokesman explained that an unprecedented number of sportspeople had received honours, with 123 awards compared to 44 in the last list. Of these 78 were because of the Olympics or Paralympics.

Elsewhere, Ewan McGregor and fashion designer Stella McCartney will receive OBEs, and beloved illustrator Quentin Blake will be knighted.
