There’s been a whole lot of hype over Twitter – the latest internet craze – in the past few weeks, with some of our favourite celebrities already in on the tweeting action. Firstly let’s clear up the confusion? What exactly is Twitter? The best way that we can describe it that it’s like Facebook status updates, only less self-obsessed. And a tweet? That’s the actual message, which you have to fit in to 140 characters.

For pure Twitter indulgence, we took a look at our favourite Twittering celebrities and their Twitter style. Warning: this may alter your perception of the life of a celebrity…

Lily Allen

Twitter style: Lily’s Twitter is full of celebrity feuding, self-promotion, cultural ramblings and fast-paced comments about what she’s doing with her own Lily Twist. It also includes self-obsessed updates on her American takeover, and where she is in the Hot 100. During a feud with Perez Hilton. Perez tweeted that Lily was casting for a new video and his fans should tell her to cast him. Instead Lily replied “@perezhilton oh , I\'m sorry, we\'ve already cast the jealous and bitter lonely old queen role. Next time eh ?” and what followed was a bitter war of tweets.

Funniest tweet: “PETA, By the way my coat isn’t real fur, but it was bloody expensive. Cover me in paint and I WILL send you the bill.”

Britney Spears

Twitter style: We suspect Brit’s Twitter might not actually be written by the Womanizer herself, and seems to be about endorsing a variety of products. For example, “I’m so excited Virgin Mobile joined the circus & is sponsoring my tour. Can’t wait to come out & see everyone starting March 3rd – Brit”. Or promoting Britney’s official website. The thing that gives it away that Britney probably doesn’t write her own tweets? They’re signed off “– posted by Team Brit”. This lady has her own team to post her tweets!

Funniest tweet: “Hi Yall! Brit Brit here, just wanted to update you all on the size of my vagina. It’s about 4 feet wide with razor sharp teeth.” Unfortunately, it seems that Brit’s site – along with several other celeb Twitterers - was hacked around this time, so we’re guessing she didn’t actually write this herself.

Perez Hilton

Twitter style: Perez Hilton’s blog is totally self-serving. His style is cutting, bitchy, full of insults and promotes his website perezhilton.com. Perez has taken celeb blogging into the 21st century and made Twitter part of the Perez Hilton enterprise.

Iamdiddy

Twitter style: None other than P Diddy on Twitter. iamdiddy’s tweets seem to be a lot of incoherent ramblings and chat about his life. He also seems to like saying “what up” and “let’s go” a bit too much. There’s even an invite to an Oscar party on his page – so we’ll be following him more often.

Twitter style: A lot about nothing really. Mischa has 9,582 followers, and mainly suggest they check out mischabarton.com for her thoughts on style, fashion and clothes. Yawn!

Twitter style: Possibly our favourite Twitterer, Demi gives us an insight into the ‘real lives’ of celebrities. Forget MTV cribs, this is where it’s at. Demi tweets about cleaning, families, and moans a lot about Ashton’s Twittering. We love it!

Twitter style: Annoying mum. Solange gives daily updates about her life, which, as a single celebrity mother, seems to involve babies, babies, the studio, and more babies. She’s even named the Twitter page as “Chronicles of a touring single mum” If anything the Twitter page means that we have nothing more than respect for all of the work Solange does while trying to raise her first child. But it wouldn’t hurt if she mentioned Beyoncé every so often.

Twitter style: Full of lads’ banter, John Mayer’s page pays a lot of homage to his musical heroes, but sadly barely mentions Jennifer Aniston (which would make his page a whole lot more interesting!)

Twitter style: Adam’s one of the only celebs that Twitters off the radar by going under a different name, but we found him out! And how excited were we? It’s almost as good as being given access to Justin Timberlake’s Facebook account! Adam’s style seems to be uncouth and out-there, Twittering about anything and everything, and some very obvious flirting with some other Twitterers.
