Angelina Jolie shot to fame when she won an Oscar for her role in Girl, Interrupted in 2000. She quickly gained notoriety for her wild antics, which included collecting knives, wearing a vial of her second husband Billy Bob Thornton’s blood around her neck and her gothic dress style. The actress also admitted using “every drug under the sun” and dabbling with bisexuality.

Angelina turned her back on her wild past when she adopted Maddox, an orphan from Cambodia, in 2002. She later became a UN Goodwill Ambassador and began giving away a third of her income to charity. After embarking on a relationship with actor Brad Pitt she went on to adopt Zahara from Ethiopia and Pax Thien from Vietnam. She gave birth to daughter Shiloh in 2006 and most recently twins Vivienne and Knox in July. Angelina’s style has evolved along the way and although she still favours black the actress has ditched the goth look for a more sophisticated, maternal style.

Kylie Minogue first shot to stardom playing mechanic Charlene Mitchell in the Australian soap Neighbours in the ’80s. She became one of the show’s most popular characters ever and a record 23.8m watched her marry Scott Robinson, played by Jason Donovan. Kylie was famed for her frizzy blonde hair and tomboy clothes and heralded as the ultimate girl next door. She kept up her wholesome image when she launched a pop career and tube dresses and bauble earrings were about as daring as she got.

Kylie ditched her clean-cut image and reinvented herself as an edgy pop siren when she began dating rock star Michael Hutchence in 1987. In 2000 she completed the transition to sex kitten when she donned a skimpy pair of hot pants in the video for Spinning Around. Once famed for the overalls she wore in Neighbours she has become a style icon and her theatrical – and raunchy – stage costumes are more famous than her music. Last year Kylie’s wardrobe was the star of a major exhibition at The Victoria And Albert Museum in London, showcasing her iconic outfits over the years.

From Wholesome Pop Princess, to Dirrty girl...

Christina Aguilera first launched into the public’s consciousness as a wholesome teen pop princess with a big voice and a wardrobe consisting of mainly midriff baring tops and baggy trousers. However the singer became bored of her squeaky-clean persona and began to spice things up by calling herself ‘Xtina’, getting 12 piercings, including a nose and a nipple ring, and donning black leather S&M outfits. She stunned fans when she appeared in the music video for her single Dirrty wearing a tiny bikini and chaps while dancing provocatively with her male and female dancers.

Now a married mother of one, Christina has moved towards a more elegant and understated old Hollywood look. Gone are the barely-there outfits, unkempt hair extensions and caked on make-up. She now opts for classy figure hugging dresses, Marilyn Monroe style hair and has toned down her make-up and removed most of her piercings. Christina says that her newfound style was a natural progression.

“I think the Christina look I had before meeting [husband] Jordan is well and truly in my past. I\'ve decided on a classier image for the future - more fitting for a married lady.”

When Billie Piper first hit the big time in 1998 she was a fresh-faced 15-year-old tomboy with a penchant for baggy jeans and trouser suits. She became the youngest artist ever to go straight to No 1 in the UK charts and racked a string of hits in three years. But Billie shocked everyone when she married DJ Chris Evans – 16 years her senior - in 2001 and quit her music career for good.

Fast-forward seven years and Billie has reinvented herself as a successful actress. She played Rose Tyler in the hugely popular BBC sci-fi series Doctor Who for three years before completely dropping her girl next door image to play an infamous high class prostitute in ITV2 drama Belle De Jour. Billie divorced Chris Evans in 2007 but the pair remain close. She married actor Laurence Fox last December and the couple are expecting their first baby together. Her look has changed along with her career and husbands and – although she still prefers the casual look – she has left the baggy trousers behind in favour of jumper dresses, jeans and berets.

Charlotte Church was discovered during a phone-in children\'s talent contest and the fresh-faced child soprano released her debut album Voice Of An Angel at the age of 13. She became an overnight success and even sang for the Pope. But by mid-teens Charlotte was keen to shed her angelic image and began dating unsuitable boys and smoking heavily. She later gained a reputation for binge drinking and falling out of nightclubs drunk and was the victim of two kiss and tells by the time she was 18.

She insists that her partying days are over and she prefers to stay in and cook romantic meals for her boyfriend and daughter Ruby. When Leona Lewis auditioned for TV talent show The X Factor in 2006 she was a painfully shy receptionist with corkscrew curls and an incredible voice. She wowed the judges – and more importantly viewers – during her time in the competition and no one was surprised when she took home the grand prize – a £1m record deal. Her confidence and stage presence seemed to grow throughout the series and by the end she had blossomed into a fully-fledged star.

She continued pushing the envelope with her raunchy outfits and dance routines – while claiming to be a virgin - throughout her late teens and became one of the most sought after stars in the world. But after two failed marriages at the age of 26 – the first only lasting 55 hours – and having two children in close succession, the singer’s life began to spiral out of control.

Britney is now beginning to turn her life around after a very public breakdown. Her wild behaviour – which included shaving her head bald and holding her sons Sean and Jayden hostage in her bathroom - led to her being carted off to a mental health facility and eventually losing custody of the boys to former husband Kevin Federline. Nonetheless she has been making progress in recent months and is busying recording a new album. Britney is said to be planning a major comeback but will she be able to reinvent herself favourably after falling so hard?

When Mariah Carey began topping the charts in the early ’90s she was as wholesome as a singer could be. Her wardrobe consisted of floor-length ball gowns, turtle-necks and flannel shirts and her favoured songs were love ballads that showcased her multi-octave voice. Her career - steered by her husband and record boss Tommy Mottola – went from strength to strength and she became one of the most successful singers ever.

After a painful split from Mottola in 1998 Mariah began embracing her sexier side. Her necklines got lower and she replaced her formal evening gowns with skimpy bikinis and barely-there mini-skirts. Her lyrics became racier and she left her pop roots behind and adopted a more sultry R&B sound. Despite her sexed-up image the 37-year-old, who married actor Nick Cannon earlier this year, insists that she is a “prude” in real life and her wild outfits are merely a vehicle for her to ‘play dress-up’ after being forced to cover-up for so long.

Few stars who have reinvented themselves as many times – and as successfully – as Madonna. She began her music career as a lace-glove wearing punk princess with dark roots before sexing up her image in the ’90s with the raunchy single Like A Virgin and cavorting on stage in a cone-shaped bra and fishnet stockings. The unpredictable star’s sound has evolved with her style and she has experimented with everything from disco to electronica to R&B.

After 30 years in the spotlight Madonna – who turned 50 this year– has toned down her sexy image considerably – bar the odd hot pants and on-stage lesbian kisses - and now admits that she is embarrassed by her raunchy past.

“Sometimes I was being overtly sexy for the sake of showing off,” she says.

She has reinvented herself as a lady of the manor and spends much of her time at the English country estate she shares with husband Guy Ritchie and her children Lola, Rocco and David. She even turned her hand to writing and released a series of successful children’s books in 2003.

From Fresh-Faced Teen TV Star...

Katie Holmes first came into the spotlight while playing girl next door Joey Potter in the popular teen TV series Dawson’s Creek. The fresh-faced beauty became an instant star and appeared on the covers of hundreds of magazines. Katie - who had only just left school when she won the role - opted for a very natural look at the time and usually teamed her straight shoulder-length dark hair with a minimal amount of make-up. When the hit show ended Katie attempted to shed her ‘Joey’ persona but seemed destined to be typecast as wholesome and innocent for the rest of her career.

But after befriending ‘fashion expert’ Victoria Beckham and cutting her hair into a sleek bob not dissimilar to the Spice Girl, she began to adopt a more elegant and classic style and has fast become a fashionista in her own right.
