Here’s our pick of some of the best, and worst celebrities that have dabbled in the world of publishing.

Madonna

Madonna, books, celebrity gossip, celebrity, celebrity news Madonna After publishing her erotic book Sex in 1991, Madonna was probably the most unlikely candidate to start writing children’s books. Diane Sawyer famously asked her “What moral right do you have, after writing Sex, to write a children’s book?” The queen of reinvention managed to pull it off, and has written gems such as Mr Peabody’s Apples and Yakov And The Seven Thieves.

David Walliams

David Walliams, books, celebrity gossip, celebrity, celebrity news David Walliams David Walliam’s The Boy In The Blue Dress is a children’s book with a difference. It’s about a boy who loves football, but also loves looking at the dresses in Vogue.  David says in an interview on amazon.com that he wanted to examine the idea of difference as something to be celebrated and embraced. But could the book be autobiographical? He does dress as a ‘laydeee’ in Little Britain, after all.

Katie Price

Jordan, books,jk rowling, celebrity gossip, celebrity, celebrity news, katie price Katie Price Katie Price came under fire when it was discovered that her line of books were actually written by a ghost writer. The glamour model’s literary dalliances began in 2007 and  Jordan has been said to have surpassed JK Rowling in book sales with her books: Crystal, Angel, and Angel Uncovered – much to Rowling’s annoyance we’re sure. But you have to hand it to the glamour model – she is worth over £17m.

John Lithgow

books, celebrity gossip, celebrity, celebrity news John Lithgow Shrek star John Lithgow’s first book Remarkable Farkle McBride was released in 2000 and his writing credits include Mahilia Mouse Goes To College, Marsupial Sue and I’m A Manatee. John has admitted his books don’t really have messages but are more about teaching children that education is fun.

Felicity Huffman

Felicity Huffman, books, celebrity gossip, celebrity, celebrity news, desperate housewives Felicity Huffman Desperate Housewives star Felicity Huffman obviously learnt from the series that men don’t always get the best deal. In A Practical Guide For The Boyfriend she gives men some tips on steering clear of relationship disasters, including:

How to apologise without really apologising
How to look like you’re listening when you’re thinking about other things
How to tell if her ‘no’ means ‘yes’ or her ‘yes’ means ‘no’.

Although you might find it hard to get your partner to read the book, it does confirm that us girls all think alike.

John Travolta

books, celebrity gossip, celebrity,John Travolta, celebrity news John Travolta The plane-loving Grease star wrote a story called Propeller One Way Night Coach: A Story about a child’s first plane ride. Some critics have hailed the book as a magical children’s book, while others haven’t been so kind and have lambasted Travolta for his diabolical writing skills. That Travolta wrote a book about planes shouldn’t come as a shock, he owns his own Boeing 707-138, appropriately registered N707 JT. He also pilots three Gulfstream jets and a Learjet, and his home in Florida comes complete with airstrips.

Kim Cattrall

books, sex and the city, celebrity gossip, celebrity, celebrity news, kim cattrall Kim Cattrall Kim Cattrall’s first two books, Satisfaction: The Art Of The Female Orgasm and Sexual Intelligence, were based on the issues confronted by her character Samantha in Sex And The City. Satisfaction: The Art Of the Female Orgasm was unabashedly a how-to guide, with pointy arrows and everything, and definitely not for the faint-hearted. The Sex And The City star said of her writing, “Orgasm is fabulous, but I realised I had started at the end of the story. Writing a book on how to satisfy sexual desire lead me to become more interested in what its roots and sources actually are.”

Julie Andrews

books, celebrity gossip, celebrity, celebrity news, julie andrews Julie Andrews Sound Of Music star Julie Andrews first began writing when she promised her step-daughter she’d write her a book. Encouraged by her husband Blake Edwards, Julie wrote Mandy in 1970 and The Last Of The Great Whangdoodles in 1974. After that, Julie didn’t write again until the operation on her throat in 1997. While recovering she began writing Little Bo books about a cat and then Dumpy The Dump Truck series.  Since her operation Julie told Reader’s Digest, “My writing has really leapt into focus for me now.”

Ethan Hawke

books, celebrity gossip,Uma Thurman, celebrity,Ethan Hawke, celebrity news Ethan Hawke Readers and critics seemed undecided about Ethan Hawke’s first book The Hottest State, which he wrote in 1995 while still married to Uma Thurman.
His latest book Ash Wednesday, published in 2003, is about “two people, three lives, one love”. A soldier goes AWOL to try and rekindle his relationship with the mother of his unborn child. As the couple drive across America they confront family history, personal hang-ups and questions about faith, death and learning how to live. Hawke’s third book was better received than his first or second and cemented him as one of the better celebrity writers.

Whoopi Goldberg

books, celebrity gossip, celebrity, celebrity news Whoopi Goldberg Do you ever think that children’s manners are deteriorating as each year passes? Well so does Sister Act star Whoopi Goldberg. She published Whoopi’s Big Book Of Manners in 2006, which teaches children and even grown-ups some of life’s most valuable lessons, like don’t burp in public and don’t slurp your food. Whoopi’s got a great voice for kids, who learn and laugh and will promise never to put their fingers in their noses again. Goldberg also published Book in 1997 and Alice in 1992.

Pamela Anderson

Pamela Anderson, books, kid rock, tommy lee, celebrity gossip, celebrity, celebrity news Pamela Anderson Pamela Anderson’s book Star is a novelisation of the former Baywatch Babe’s life. It follows Star Wood-Leigh’s steamy life-story: how a tight t-shirt and a football game led to an appearance in Mann magazine, an accidental audition led to a role on Hammer Time (Home Improvement, anyone?) and a show called Lifeguards, Inc confirms her celebrity status. Sound familiar? The book contains Tommy Lee and Kid Rock-like characters and many a sexual encounter with famous celebrities and complete strangers, leaving the reader wondering where fiction ends and fact begins, but surely if you’re going to write an autobiography you’d just write it?
