After a Madonna fan was sentenced to be detained indefinitely after breaking into the singer\'s London home, we consider the most famous cases of celebrity stalking.

After writing “M, the universe brought us together in 1992 and again this year in Prague. Meet me please” outside Madonna’s New York apartment building, retired fireman Robert Linhart was arrested. He was eventually released on bail for £12,000 after he denied resisting arrest and weapons possession, while his lawyers argued he was merely a fan.

But of course, this isn’t the first time that Madonna’s had to deal with unwanted fan attention.

In 1996, another Robert, this time a Hoskins, was sent to jail for 10 years after stalking and making violent threats against Madonna. Homeless Hoskins had been arrested the year before after he claimed the Material Girl was his wife, and threatened to slice her throat from ear to ear. He also threatened to kill her bodyguards for coming between them, and at one point actually managed to get within 10 feet of her after scaling the wall of her LA home. On his third attempt he was shot and wounded in a scuffle with guards. He continued hounding her from prison and wrote \'Madonna\'s stalker\' on the walls of his cell. Hoskins prison time was up in 2006, and there’ve been no reports of him pestering the star since.

Colin Farrell

A woman climbed on stage and approached Collin Farrell during filming of The Tonight Show With Jay Leno in July 2006. Dessarae Bradford handed Colin and Jay a copy of her self-published book Colin Farrell: A Dark Twisted Puppy. And it that wasn’t bizarre enough, Bradford also wrote another book entitled I F**ked Alec Baldwin In His A*s – wow. Bradford was told to remain at least 150 yards from the actor, his six-year-old son James and the child\'s mother, model Kim Bordenave, according to the restraining order issued in Los Angeles Superior Court, which expired in August 2009. There’ve been no reports of Dessarae trying to contact Farrell since her restraining order was lifted. So maybe she’s learnt her lesson?

Uma Thurman

A man was convicted on 6 May 2008 of stalking Kill Bill star Uma Thurman. Jack Jordan from the US state of Maryland, was arrested in October 2007 for allegedly hounding the actress over two years, including repeatedly emailing a terrified Uma and her father, and threatening to kill himself in a phone call to Uma\'s mother. Unsurprisingly, Jordan had received psychiatric treatment in the past. Jordan\'s lawyer said in his defence that he didn’t “think the way you and I think. He doesn\'t know the boundaries you and I know\". No kidding!

Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones

Stalker Dawnette Knight was obsessed with Michael Douglas and even sent notes to the Basic Instinct star\'s father Kirk Douglas, inviting him to Douglas’ wife Catherine Zeta-Jones’ funeral. One horrific note read, \"Catherine is going to be sliced up like meat on a bone and fed to the dogs.\" In 2005, Knight was sentenced to three years in prison and the Welsh actress told her, \"You will never be famous, you will never be infamous; you are just a criminal.\"

Steven Spielberg

celebrity, celebrity court case,Steven Spielberg, celebrity stalker steven spielberg Indiana Jones director Steven Spielberg testified at his stalker\'s trial in 1997 after Jonathan Norman backed his Land Rover into the front gates of Spielberg\'s Malibu estate, then fled on foot. When he was arrested lurking nearby, he told police he was Spielberg\'s adopted son and was found to be carrying a \'rape kit\' of duct tape, knife, razor blades and handcuffs. Spielberg told an LA court: \"If he\'s out on the street, I\'ll live in fear,\" after hearing that Norman had planned to rape him in front of his family. In 1998 Norman was jailed for 25 years.

Brad Pitt

Athena Rolando broke into Brad Pitt\'s home in 1999 and was caught by cops wearing his clothes. When police searched her they found a book on witchcraft and a foot-long safety pin wrapped with ribbons. She had previously placed a pile of menacing letters at his gate and lurked outside his home in the middle of the night wearing a dressing gown and slippers. Rolando, who claimed that voices led her to Pitt\'s home, was sentenced to 15 days community service, three years probation and psychological counselling.

Gwyneth Paltrow

Gwyneth Paltrow told an LA court in April 2001 that she was terrorised by pizza delivery man Dante Soiu, who sent her hundreds of sexually explicit letters, magazines and emails. Soiu was obsessed with the Iron Man star for almost two years, and even turned up at the home of her parents, Bruce Paltrow and Blythe Danner. He was sentenced to three years in a psychiatric institution. Quite rightly.

Sharon Stone

Sharon stone, celebrity, celebrity court case, celebrity stalker sharon stone Sharon Stone was horrified to find Italian Agostino P\'Omato had broken into her home in 2001. He professed his love and said he had come from Italy to marry her, but her driver and gardeners stopped him from accosting her in her pool house. After being granted a temporary restraining order, he was evaluated at a psychiatric hospital and his family took him home to Italy.

Jodie Foster

John Hinckley became obsessed with Jodie Foster after she played a teenage prostitute in Taxi Driver; he even enrolled at Yale at the same time as the actress to be near her. After bombarding her with letters, in 1981 he flew to Washington and shot and wounded Ronald Reagan, who was then US President, along with three members of his staff. Hinckley claimed he had done it to impress Jodie with his \"historical deed\". And to think we usually get won over by flowers! Hinckley has been in a psychiatric institution in Washington ever since.

Meg Ryan

Meg Ryan was terrified when she learned psycho John Hughes had been arrested at a Malibu home while trying to find her. Hughes told a court in 2002 that he and Meg were married, and that he\'d broken into the house because Meg \"forgot to leave the key under the doormat\". A psychiatrist testified that Hughes was a \"danger to Ryan\'s safety,” and he was sentenced to six months in jail.

Britney Spears

Britney Spears was sent hundreds of chilling letters and photographs by obsessed fan Masahiko Shizawa who came from Japan to stalk her. \"I will definitely see you again at any cost,\" he wrote in one worrying missive, \"and I hope that your bodyguard doesn\'t prevent me from catching you this time.\" He was ordered to stay 300 yards from the singer and not contact her for three years. Shizawa counteracted by attempting to sue Britney and two of her security guards for causing him “extreme emotional distress” stemming from a confrontation with the guards outside of her house in 2002. Britney was removed as a defendant from the trial, because, well, that would’ve gone against the restraining order wouldn’t it.

Celebrities with stalkers

cheryl cole, celebrity, celebrity court case, celebrity stalker cheryl cole

Earlier this year it was reported that police were investigating a rape threat left for Cheryl Cole on Dermot O’Leary’s voicemail. X Factor presenter O’Leary is believed to have raised the alarm after hearing the disturbing message. A City of London Police spokesman confirmed an investigation had been launched, saying, “We are investigating claims of an offensive message being left on a mobile telephone. It follows a complaint from a member of the public.”

\r\n\r\n

This isn’t the first crazed fan Cheryl has come face-to-face with. Back before she was Saint Cheryl she worked in a café in Newcastle, and told Q magazine she received her fair share of unwanted attention. “There was this creep who used to come in a couple of days a week,” the singer told the magazine. “He was fine at first, but then he started asking to look at my feet. I wore open-toed sandals, and he said he loved my feet. I was about 15 years-old and he was a 30 year-old man.”

\r\n\r\n

As if that wasn’t enough, after Girls aloud came off stage at G-A-Y in 2007, the band found a naked, lesbian stalker in their dressing room!
