Things first started looking shaky for Mel back in 2006, when he had to publicly grovel after he was caught drunk driving. But it wasn’t just driving under the influence that was the problem, Mel had to apologise to the public when it was revealed that he had told the arresting officers “Jews are to blame for every war in the world” and referred to a female officer as “sugar tits”. Not cool Mel, not cool at all.

Then, in 2008, a man understood to be a builder was found dead at Mel’s LA home, appearing to have committed suicide. The site’s foreman found the man dead in a newly built part of Mel’s home. When the police were called, officers from Lost Hills –the same police station that dealt with Mel’s ‘sugar tits’ episode – attended the scene. How embarrassing.

In February 2009, Mel divorced from his wife and mother of his seven children, Robyn, from whom he’d been been separated for three years and married to for 29, and shacked up with his new girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva. A month after announcing the divorce it was revealed that the new couple were expecting a child. “When it’s all said and done, I did a pretty good hatchet job on my marriage myself,” Mel said in an interview with the Daily Mail in 2010. “I’m to blame. If you’re inclined to judge, put it here.”

Next up, Mel reportedly raged at his Church’s congregation in June 2009, after hearing gossip about his private life. “Mel’s completely lost it,” an insider claimed. “His holier than thou world is falling apart around him. He paced back and forth, angrily telling the churchgoers that he would not stand by and be judged and scrutinised.”

In December 2010, Winona Ryder recalled an awkward meeting she had with Mel Gibson 15 years earlier. “I was at one of those big Hollywood parties. And he [Gibson] was really drunk. I was with my friend, who’s gay. Gibson made a really horrible gay joke,” Ryder told GQ magazine. “And somehow it came out that I was Jewish. He said something about ‘oven dodgers’, but I didn’t get it. I’d never heard that before. I was like, “He’s anti-Semitic and he’s homophobic.’ No one believed me.”

Around the same time, Britney Spears was blamed for the break-up of Mel’s marriage. Robyn reportedly filed for divorce after 28-years of marriage, because Gibson offered Britney a helping hand in 2008. “He also took her for dinner in LA. But the innuendo and whispers got to Robyn. She had to get out and this meant divorce. Robyn doesn’t believe anything happened but thought it odd that a 50-something man struck a friendship with someone so young. She was aware what people might be thinking and wasn’t very happy to say the least.”

In July 2010, police were called to investigate reports that Mel had slapped his girlfriend and mother of his eighth child, Oksana Grigorieva, who claimed that he had knocked her teeth out during an altercation in January. Later that week, a tape was released which recorded an exchange where Gibson admitted to hitting Oksana saying she “f*****g deserved it.” She claimed he had hurt their daughter during the attack.

Then, Mel’s legal team alleged that the actor’s ex-girlfriend Oksana doctored images of their daughter to support her claims that Gibson had hurt the child during an attack. While the couple battled it out over custody and maintenance payments, Grigorieva claimed she and her daughter had been injured when Mel punched her. Legal papers claimed there was ‘no indication of an abrasion or other type of injury’.

The saga continued throughout July 2010 as it was announced that Oksana was being investigated for attempting to extort money from Gibson over the leaked tapes. “Extortion allegations were bought to our attention and we’re looking into it,” L.A Sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore explained.

Finally, in November 2010, Mel admitted to slapping then-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva during the heated row. Mel claimed that he had slapped his partner as a defence strategy to use “reasonable force to protect a child from injury”. “I slapped Oksana one time with an open hand in an attempt to bring her back to reality,” Mel is quoted as saying. “I did not slap her hard, I was just trying to shock her so that she would stop screaming, continuing shaking Lucia back and forth.”
Mel’s not the only hot-tempered celebrity out there.

In August 2010 it was revealed thatreported that Mel was receiving hypnotherapy to get over the split with Oksana Grigorieva, “I gave him a few sessions to help him deal with the stress he is obviously experiencing at the moment,” famous hypnotist Rick Collingwood explained. “I must say that he is a far nicer person than what is being portrayed presently in the media. It will be interesting to see the results when all of the truths are revealed during the on- going legal saga.”

Finally it was reported that Mel was ‘furious’ with the producers of the Hangover Part II after his planned cameo was dropped . Gibson hoped to get his career back on track with his role as a tattooist in the comedy but was dropped shortly before filming his scenes after complaints about his involvement from the film’s cast and crew.
“He doesn’t understand why Mike Tyson, a drug user and convicted rapist, who turned his life around, was given a chance [in the first film] while Mel was kicked to the curb. Everybody deserves a second chance,” an insider claimed.
