George was jailed in September 2010 after crashing his Range Rover into a Snappy Snaps shop front in North London and found guilty of driving under the influence of drugs. He spent his sentence in Highpoint prison, near Haverhill, Suffolk. On his release he said, “I want to be out, I want to go out. You will get sick of me from seeing me about.”

“Fantastic,” the singer continued. “What a beautiful day. I just want to say thank you to everybody who supported me in there. It’s been inspirational and I’m coming out here on my own so that you’ll realise that I just want to start again. Do you know what I mean?”

Michael says he has come out of his stint behind bars determined to get his musical career back on track, and friends say the experience has left him “reinvigorated musically”. “By the way,” he told photographers outside of his London home yesterday, “I’ve just thought of a really good idea for a song. It’s going to be nothing to do with prison.”

Paris Hilton

Paris Hilton seems to have been arrested more times than we’ve had hot dinners. The socialite was even recently told by a judge that the “Clark County Detention Centre is not the Waldorf Astoria.” We’re sure she found out for herself though when she spent time in prison in 2007.
\r\n
The star was sentenced to 45 days after she was found to be in violation of her probation for reckless driving under the influence of alcohol. The socialite spent just half of her sentence behind bars, and was greeted by her parents before being whisked away in a black 4x4 smiling and waving at the paparazzi. Paris went onto Larry King a day later to speak about her ordeal. “I’ve been through a lot, and it was pretty traumatic experience that I have really grown from,” she told the talk show host, before adding, “I was treated like any other inmate, no better no worse.”

Michelle Rodriguez

Michelle ‘my middle name is trouble’ Rodriguez described her jail time as ‘cool’ in an interview in 2006, which. Come on Michelle, kite Surfing is cool, spending 65 hours staring at four walls is not. The actress chose to spend time in prison over a 240-hour community service after she was convicted of drink driving. The Avatar actress said of the time she spent behind bars, “It was so cool. I love people, and it was a primal crew. The only thing that keeps them going is fighting for salt and making dice out of soap. It was an amazing experience. I wouldn’t take it back for anything,” before adding, “I have a really good belief in destiny. It’s, like, if I’m gonna be killed in there, I’m gonna be killed in there. But people were cool.”
\r\n
\r\n “I represent the people you know what I mean?” She asked, and to be honest, no we don’t. “If somebody picks on me, they’ll get what’s coming. I didn’t have to handle myself is what I’m saying. I had love in there. People got where I’m coming from.” Well, we don’t.

Pete Doherty

Probably someone you’d expect to never hear praising the prison system, Baby Shambles front man Pete Doherty has said he believes the UK prison system is effective as it keeps criminals from committing crimes while they’re in jail. Pete spent time in prison after he breached probation in 2008 and theft in 2003 and said, “It keeps you off the street, doesn’t it. It works that ways. But it doesn’t stop you offending. Not through rehabilitation… Prison works, because it stops you committing crime. Unless you’re going to stab someone in the showers.”

Lindsay Lohan

Life must be pretty dull for the usually hard partying Lindsay Lohan at the moment. After spending 14 days in prison (just a fraction of the 90 days she was meant to serve) the star was released on Monday 2 August, and then found herself facing a three-month rehabilitation programme. The Herbie Fully Loaded was sentenced after missing the alcohol education classes she had been ordered to attend under the terms of her probation from a 2007 drink-driving charge. Lindsay spent her time in an all-female jail in Los Angeles, and was placed in solitary confinement because of her status. However, prison officials insisted she was given the same treatment and food.
\r\n
The star found her sentence reduced because of good behaviour and to deal with overcrowding. She previously spent 84 minutes in jail in 2007 after pleading guilty to two misdemeanour counts of being under the influence of cocaine. Will she keep things on track? What do you think?

Boy George

Probably one of the weirdest celebrity stories we’ve heard in recent years, Boy George was jailed for 15 months in 2009 for falsely imprisoning a male escort. The former Culture Club singer, real name George O’Dowd, reportedly shackled Audun Carlsen to the wall of his flat and lashed him with a chain while he shouted insults at him. The 23 year-old Norwegian then managed to get free and ran into the street in his underpants screaming for help. Boy George was released early from Edmunds Hill Prison in Suffolk, after spending just four months incarcerated. Do you think Boy George’s sentence was too lenient?

Kiefer Sutherland

In 2007, 24 actor Kiefer Sutherland was sentenced to 48 days in prison for a drunk-driving conviction. Sutherland spent Christmas, New Years and his birthday inside the big house, and wore a standard-issue orange jumpsuit for the duration of his stay. Randy Adams, Glendale Police Chief insisted Sutherland would not be given any special treatment during his stay, and was expected to complete laundry and kitchen duties like any of the other inmates. “The fact that he’s a celebrity – he checked that at the door when he checked in,” said Adams.

Stephen Fry

Word champion, Twitter King and master of wit, Stephen Fry actually spent three months in Pucklehurst prison on remand in 1975. His time behind bars occurred because Stephen stole a credit card from a family friend, found himself arrested in Swindon, and as a result found himself in the slammer.

Robert Downey Jr

Robert Downey Jr spent a lot of time behind bars for drug use and possession between 1996 and 2001. But far from the hell that many of us imagine prison might be, Robert explains that he felt safest behind bars. “When the door clicks shut, then you are safe,” the actor told NYDailyNews. “There is nothing aside from a rogue correctional officer that can do you harm if you have the right cellie. You are actually in the safest place on Earth. Safe from the intruders.”

Lil Kim

Rapper Lil’ Kim found herself sentenced to a year and a day in prison and fined $50,000 for lying to a federal grand jury in order to protect her friends who were involved in a 2001 shootout outside a Manhattan radio station. When Lindsay Lohan found herself being incarcerated at this year, Lil Kim had this to say, “One thing I want her to do after she comes out of there is evaluate everything in her life, ‘cause there’s a purpose, there is a purpose for this happening, and once she realises the purpose, she will be an even better person, trust me, than before she went in here.”\r\nBut Lil’ Kim has also claimed celebrities are treated harshly by the legal system. “I think a lot of celebrities who have received prison time, I think the judges have been pretty harsh. I feel like my time was harsh. I mean, we as celebrities we do a lot of good, but that doesn’t get looked upon.”

Martha Stewart

Home-making whiz Martha Stewart was sentenced to five months in prison and two years’ probation for lying to investigators about the sale of her ImClone Systems stock in late 2001. On top of that Stewart had to serve five months of home confinement after her release and was fined £15,000. When asked how she felt she’d deal with prison before she started her sting, Martha told Barbara Walters on ABC’s 20/20, “I could do it. I’m a really good camper. I can sleep on the ground. There are many, many good people who have gone to prison, look at Nelson Mandela.”
\r\n
Protesting her innocence, Stewart said, “I didn’t cheat the little people… we’re all little people. I didn’t cheat anybody out of anything.”
