Johnny Depp was born on 9 June 1963 in Owensboro, Kentucky. His mother Betty Sue (pictured) was a waitress and his father John Depp Sr worked as an engineer. Johnny has a mixture of German and Irish ancestry with a pinch of Cherokee added from a great-grandmother. Has one brother, Danny, and two sisters, Debbie and Christie.

In his early childhood Johnny\'s family moved more than 20 times, but they finally put down roots in Florida when he was seven. His parents divorced when he was 15. Johnny\'s stressful upbringing led to self-harm - he talked about his self-inflicted scars in an interview, saying, "My body is a journal in a way. It\'s like what sailors used to do, where every tattoo meant something, a specific time in your life when you make a mark on yourself, whether you do it yourself with a knife or with a professional tattoo artist."

Johnny\'s big break came with a role in Wes Craven\'s Horror classic A Nightmare On Elm Street. He starred in the US TV police drama 21 Jump Street from 1987 to 1990 where his fame grew.He became a teen idol and received thousands of fan letters a week.
