October seemed to be a month of misery for celebrity relationships, with everyone from Courteney Cox and David Arquette to Christina Aguilera and Jordan Bratman calling it quits on their relationships. But, we decided that, rather than focus on the miserable side of celebrity divorces, we should try and look on the bright side too. So here’s our roundup of the celebrity make up and break ups of the year…

Make-up: Halle Berry and Olivier Martinez

What’s the story?

Possibly feeling redundant from his position as ‘Hot European arm candy’ after his break up with Kylie Minogue, Olivier Martinez has found himself another red-blooded woman to spend his time with in the form of Oscar-winning actress Halle Berry. The pair reportedly met in July while filming thriller Dark Tide in South Africa, but only went public a few weeks ago at the Carousel of Hope Ball in Los Angeles. Halle’s reportedly already introduced Oliver to her mother, Judith. Fast work, Halle.

Break-up: Christina Aguilera and Jordan Bratman

Christina Aguilera and music executive Jordan Bratman announced their split at the beginning of October, but reports claimed they had separated a few months previous. “It’s not easy and there have been a lot of tears and sadness,” Christina told Redbook magazine. \r\nThe couple met in 2002 and married in 2005, and have a two year-old son Max together. Since the split DJ Samantha Ronson has been cited as one of many marital problems, as she was seen leaving Christina’s house on the day that the news broke. Threesome rumours began, and Marlon David, Sam’s music producer even said, “Sam said she had a threesome with Xtina in Mexico last month, that’s when she realised she was a ‘hot piece of ass’.” Christina denied the rumours, with a rep telling the Chicago Sun-Times, “It’s a good, long-time friendship and nothing more than that.”

Make-up: Demi Lovato and Justin Bieber

What’s the story?

Demi Lovato just booked herself into rehab, and we think we may have worked out why. We reckon that since it was claimed she’s dating Baby singer Justin Bieber she’s figured she’ll be safer from his fan’s death threats if she’s out of the public eye. Getting her cougar claws in early, a source said that 18 year-old Demi has reportedly been telling people that teen heart throb Justin, 16, is very mature for his age, and a very good kisser. We can hear hearts breaking everywhere, sorry girls!

Break-up: Courteney Cox and David Arquette

OK, put you hand up if you’re confused by the whole Courteney Cox and David Arquette situation? You are? Good, us too. \r\nAfter announcing they’re splitting two weeks ago, Courteney has told Australia’s TV week magazine, “I don’t know what will happen, but this is not like we are getting a divorce.” The couple announced their separation on October 12, in a statement, which said they’d been apart for “some time.” The reasons sited for the split were “to better understand ourselves and the qualities we need in a partner and for our marriage.”\r\nDavid later went on to tell Howard Stern that Cox had called time on their relationship because she didn’t want to be his “mother anymore”. Arquette then proved how childish he could be by telling Stern he hadn’t had sex with Courteney in four months, but had had relations with a waitress which had made him feel, “pretty manly.” He then had to apologise, making him feel pretty un-manly we’d imagine.

Make-up: Rachel McAdams and Michael Sheen

What’s the story?

If you’d told us a year ago that Michael Sheen and Rachel McAdams would be getting it on, we would have laughed in your face. But now the couple have come out of hiding holding hands together. The pair reportedly met at a party for Michael’s drama Beautiful Boy and then spent time hanging out in cafes together. Michael has an 11-year-old daughter with his ex Kate Beckinsale while Rachel previously dated her The Notebook co-star Ryan Gosling.

Break-up: Sam Mendes and Kate Winslet

What’s the story?

After making Reservation Road, a movie about a couple who break up, together, it became a case of life imitating art as Director Sam Mendes and actress Kate Winslet’s relationship hit rocky road. Months later, the couple announced that they had separated, saying, “The split is entirely amicable and is by mutual agreement. Both parties are fully committed to the future joint parenting of their children. Tell tale signs had cropped up that all was not well in the Mendes household when Kate attended the Baftas and Oscars alone. The couple have a son, Joe Alfie Winslet Mendes who was born in 2003, and Kate has a daughter, Mia, from her marriage to director Jim Threapleton.

What’s the story?

Take that frown and turn it upside Kate Winslet! Kate first stepped out with British model Louis Dowler just a few months after her split from ex-husband Sam Mendes, when they were spotted holding hands while spending a night in London. The pair have since been seen out at celebrity launches, and even partied in Mahiki together after having dinner at Groucho. Talk about trading your husband in for a younger model.

Break-up: Charlie Sheen and Brooke Mueller

What’s the story?

Just one week after police arrested Charlie Sheen after he trashed his hotel room at New York’s plaza hotel, and an adult film actress was reportedly found in his hotel room, his wife Brooke Mueller filed for divorce. Not really surprising though is it? Brooke cited irreconcilable differences as the reason behind the split. The separation dates on the papers say 25 December 2009, the same day that Sheen was arrested in Aspen for domestic violence, when he was accused of threatening Mueller with a knife. The couple have twin sons, Bob and Max, who were born in March 2009. Sheen also has two other children with his ex-wife Denise Richards.

Make-up: Amanda Seyfried and Ryan Philippe

What’s the story?

Possibly the newest couple on our list, Amanda Seyfried and Ryan Philippe were seen getting cosy with one another at Kate Hudson’s annual Halloween party on Saturday night. According to an eye witness, the Mama Mia and Cruel Intentions stars “spent hours talking and even left the party together in Ryan’s car.” Amanda attended the party dressed as a dog, while Ryan, who is the former husband of Reese Witherspoon, dressed as Obi-Wan Kenobi. On Sunday, when she was asked about the rumours Amanda replied, “You never know.” We’ll take that as a yes then.

Break-up: Billy Ray and Tish Cyrus

What’s the story?

Country Crooner Billy Ray Cyrus and his wife Tish have announced that they are calling it quits on the 27 October. Known for being the father of Miley Cyrus and his hit Achey Breakey Heart, Billy Ray released a joint statement with Tish saying, “As you can imagine, this is a very difficult time for our family. We are trying to work through some personal matters. We appreciate your thoughts and prayers.” The couple have five children, including Miley. Billy Ray is reported to have filed for custody of the three youngest children, Noah, Braison and Miley.

Make-up: Taylor Swift and Jake Gyllenhaal

What’s the story?

One romance that Taylor Swift is not quickly denying is her relationship with Jake Gyllenhaal. The couple were first spotted apple picking together in New York looking in love. “They were walking through the trees, having fun together,” said a local. “They looked happy… some of the customers tried to take a photo of them, but they were hiding from them in the trees.” Then country singer Taylor appeared on the Ellen Degeneres show and got a grilling from the chat show host. When asked how she felt about love right now, Taylor replied, “I’m always optimistic about love… always, sometimes.”

Break-up: Carey Mulligan Shia LaBeouf

What’s the story?

Shia LaBeouf and Brit actress Carey Mulligan started dating when they met on the set of Wall Street II: Money Never Sleeps in 2009. Shia once explained why he thought they got on so well. “Neither one of us are fame whores. It works out,” he told Marie Claire. “It’s not like we’re the premiere couple; we’re not the red-carpet king and queen.” Carey lived with LaBeouf in his £1.8 million New York apartment up until their split earlier this month. Since then she’s been spotted out with British actor Tom Sturridge, who she’s said to be dating.

What’s the story?

Joe Jonas and Twilight star Ashley Greene were first reported to be dating in July. Having dated singers Taylor Swift and Demi Lovato, and becoming known as a bit of a heartbreaker, Joe moved on to Twilight actress Ashley Greene, and if reports are anything to go by the couple can’t get enough of each other. Just days after Ashley arrived in Baton Rouge, Louisiana to film Twilight: Breaking Dawn, Joe turned up and began playing homemaker cooking 23 year-old Ashley a home cooked dinner, and is allegedly already jealous about her kissing scenes with Twilight actor Jackson Rathbone.

Break-up: Blake Lively and Penn Badgley

What’s the story?

Man, we bet things were awkward on the set of Gossip Girl when the cast began filming again earlier this week. A representative for the show’s stars Blake, 23, and Penn, 23, confirmed the end of their three-year romance last week. The secretive couple first met when they were 12 years old but started dating when they were reunited on Gossip Girl in 2007. Will they get back together? Apparently not if Ryan Gosling has anything to do with it…

What’s the story?

Of course, no celebrity break-up could be complete without rumours of some form of rebound relationship. Blake Lively, who has just come out of her relationship with Gossip Girl co-star Penn Badgely is already rumoured to be dating Ryan Gosling. Infact, the Ryan Gosling rumours had already begun before her representative had confirmed she’s no longer with Penn, when Ryan and Blake refused to stand next to each other for pictures at Disney Land. Coincidence? What do you think?

Break-up: Peaches Geldof and Eli Roth

What’s the story?

Perhaps with perfect timing, 21-year-old Peaches Geldof and her horror-film director boyfriend Eli Roth, 38, split up just in time for Halloween. The pair announced that they are not together blaming “work commitments” for the end of the eight-month relationship. The pair first started dating after they met at Vanity Fair’s post-Oscars party in March.
