In 2005, Brad Pitt starred alongside Angelina Jolie in the film Mr And Mrs Smith, about a bored married couple who discover that each is an assassin then set out to kill the other. Rumours spread like wildfire that Pitt and Jolie were having an affair while Brad was still married to Friends star Jennifer Aniston. This picture of Angelina and Brad at a 20th Century Fox luncheon did nothing to dispel those rumours, as they stood remarkably far apart from one another. Brad had already split from Aniston at this point and denied any adultery, but Jolie continued to be cited as the reason behind the split.

A short time later, on 27 January 2007, Angelina’s mother Marcheline Bertrand died after a seven-year battle with ovarian cancer.
