Michael Jacksons shocking death was arguably the biggest story of the year and 25 June 2009 will be remembered as the day that many lost their musical hero. The singer suffered a cardiac arrest at his Beverly Hills home and he was pronounced dead at UCLA medical centre. His death, which is still under investigation, was later ruled a homicide. Michael was about to embark on his This Is It comeback tour and, while he would sadly never perform in front of a paying audience, a movie of the tour rehearsals was released in cinemas in October.

After a two-year battle with pancreatic cancer, Dirty Dancing star Patrick Swayze died aged 57 on 15 September 2009. Patrick Swayze passed away peacefully today with family at his side after facing the challenges of his illness for the last 20 months, his publicist Annett Wolf announced in a statement. His Dirty Dancing co-star Jennifer Grey said, He was fearless and always insisted on doing his own stunts, so it was not surprising to me that the war he waged on his cancer was so courageous and dignified. In an interview with Barbara Walters in January 2009, Swayze explained how he was fighting his illness. I keep dreaming of a future, a future with a long and healthy life, not lived in the shadow of cancer but in the light.

Farrah Fawcett, one of the trio of glamorous private eyes on TVs Charlies Angels, died after a long battle with cancer on 25 June 2009, aged 62. Although her death was overshadowed by the news of Michael Jacksons unexpected death the same day, scores of celebrity friends and co-workers came out to pay tribute to the angel. Playboy publisher Hugh Hefner called Fawcett the, Marilyn Monroe of the 1970s who defined what one thinks of as the all-American girl, adding, Men fell in love with her and women wanted to look like her.

Reality TV Star Jade Goody left us this year when she lost her high-profile battle with cervical cancer. Her mother Jackiey was at her side when she passed away on 22 March 2009 saying later, My beautiful daughter is at peace. Prime minister Gordon Brown said that he was deeply saddened by the news and described Goody as a courageous woman both in life and death.

Brittany Murphy died aged 32 on 20 December 2009, following a suspected a cardiac arrest at her Beverly Hills home. The Clueless star was found unconscious in the shower and was rushed to hospital but doctors announced her dead on arrival. Actor Ashton Kutcher, who played Murphys husband in 2003s Just Married before later dating her in real life, paid tribute to her via Twitter. The US movie director John Hughes, who created some of the most famous comedies of the 80s and 90s, died on 7 August 2009, at the age of 59. The creator of classics such as Ferris Buellers Day Off and The Breakfast Club, died after a heart attack in New York. Hughes biggest hit came in 1990 with Home Alone, which he wrote and produced, but didnt direct. The world has lost not only a quintessential filmmaker, whose influence will be felt for generations, but a great and decent man, said Home Alone star Macaulay Culkin.

Natasha Richardson died after a ski fall on 18 March 2009. Natasha, 45, a member of the famed Redgrave acting family, died after suffering injuries in a ski accident. According to a statement from Mont Tremblant Ski Resort, Richardson fell during a lesson on a beginners trail. She did not show any visible sign of injury but the ski patrol followed strict procedures and brought her back to the bottom of the slope and insisted she should see a doctor, the statement said. Richardson returned to her hotel, accompanied by her instructor, but about an hour later was not feeling good. An ambulance was called and she was taken to a local hospital before finally being moved to Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. An autopsy suggested Natasha died from bleeding in her skull caused by the fall.

Kill Bill actor David Carradine was found dead in his hotel in Thailand on 4 June 2009. The 72-year-old actor was reported to have hanged himself in a suite at the luxury Swissotel Nai Lert Park Hotel, according to Lt Teerapop Luanseng, the officer responsible for investigating the death. I can confirm that we found his body, naked, hanging in the closet, Teerapop said, adding that police suspected suicide. His death was later ruled death by misadventure.

The son of John Travolta and Kelly Preston died suddenly on 2 January 2009 after suffering a seizure while on holiday with his family. The son of the celebrity couple had Kawasaki disease, a rare illness that mainly affects young children and can cause lasting damage to the heart. Jett was the most wonderful son that two parents could ever ask for and lit up the lives of everyone he encountered. We are heartbroken that our time with him was so brief, the family said in a statement.
