Celebrity weddings: heaven and hell
Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise put on such an over-the-top wedding in 2006 that we couldn't help but love it. Compare that to Katie Price's second time down the aisle last week, which was reported to be a shambles when none of the invited celebrity guests showed up and the security team scuffled with paparazzi and it just goes to show, celebrity weddings can be the stuff of nightmares or a dream come true. Here's our pick of celebrity wedding heaven and hell...

Wedding hell: Mick and Bianca Jagger
In 1971, Rolling Stones star Mick Jagger married his fiancée Bianca Perez Morena in the French town of St Tropez. However, the ceremony was delayed for an hour and a half after bitter arguments broke out between Jagger's spokesman and the police over the number of photographers and reporters allowed in the wedding chamber. Only four photographers had been invited to the town hall, but as the ceremony approached about 100 others were trying to get into the tiny chamber. At first, Jagger refused to come down to the town hall, with his spokesman saying he did not wish to get married in a "goldfish bowl". The police insisted the media had the right to stay, and threatened to cancel the wedding unless the couple turned up. Mick and Bianca arrived and police and journalists came to blows in the frenzy.

Wedding heaven: Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise
With no expenses spared, Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise treated their friends and family to a spectacular wedding day with a medieval castle, fireworks and the biggest cake we've ever seen when they got hitched in 2006. Celebrity couples such as Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony, Brooke Shields and Chris Henchy, and Will and Jada Pinkett Smith were there to see the couple exchange their vows in Italy's beautiful Odescalchi Castle. In a Scientology ceremony, the couple vowed to "never close their eyes and sleep on a disagreement or an upset." The reception was held in the castle's grand Hall of Caesars, and after toasts from the best man and matron of honour, Katie joined her father on the dance floor for Louis Armstrong's What A Wonderful World. Next, the newlyweds took to the dance floor for their first dance to Fleetwood Mac's Songbird. While the guests ate dinner Italian tenor Andre Bocelli serenaded them with Italian love songs. Everyone then went outside for a firework display to classical music, before returning inside to a nightclub where Mark Ronson spun the decks. Sounds like the most amazing wedding day ever to us.

Wedding hell: Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee
After courting for just four days in 1995, Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee decided it would be a great idea to get hitched on a secluded beach in Cancun, Mexico. A small handful of the couple's closest friends accepted their last-minute invitations. Tommy wore black swimming shorts, while Pamela wore a tiny white, thong bikini, and instead of wearing a ring Pamela had ‘Tommy' tattooed onto her ring finger and Motley Crew drummer Lee had Pamela's name tattooed onto his manhood. Classy! In a later interview Pamela claimed she had contracted hepatitis C from sharing a tattoo needle with Tommy, while he denied having the disease. What a lovely wedding gift.

Wedding heaven: Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston
When Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston married in 2005, they had 50,000 flowers trucked in for the big day in Malibu and had trees planted along the seafront to stop unwanted press attention. Obviously, there wasn't a happily ever after for the couple, but Jen romantically promised in her vows to always make Brad's favourite banana milkshake while Brad said he wouldn't ever fiddle with their central heating thermostat, proving just how normal the starry couple actually were. Magazine Paris Match got exclusive coverage from the event, but the generous couple insisted that their fee be donated to charity. Guests included Edward Norton, Cameron Diaz, Salma Hayek and all of Jen's Friends co-stars.

Wedding hell: Katie Price and Alex Reid
All and Sundry were invited to Katie Price's wedding to Alex Reid. The rumour mill went into over-drive in the weeks leading up to the big event with reports Katie was upset many of her celebrity ‘pals' had politely declined their invitations. On the day, those rumours turned out to be true, and most of the celebrity guests conveniently found they had more important business to attend to. Those who turned their invites down included This Morning's Holly Willoughby and Big Brother presenter Davina McCall. In the end, the only celebrity guests in attendance were Melinda Messenger and Danielle Lloyd. Katie was also left distraught after ugly scenes wrecked the wedding day. Security teams and photographers scuffled as Katie arrived at the church and at one point even she reportedly got hit by a camera.

Wedding heaven: Gemma Arterton and Stefano Catelli
Prince of Persia star Gemma Arterton did things the right way when she married Stefano Catelli in Andalucia, Spain. Keeping things so low-key that no one knew the ceremony was happening until it was over, exceptd the invited guests of course. The couple announced their engagement in the summer of 2009.

Wedding hell: Britney Spears and Kevin Federline
Nothing says ‘class' like feeding your guests a wedding breakfast of southern fried chicken and slipping into a"Mrs Federline" branded tracksuit for your reception. But hey, Britney Spears isn't one to do things by halves. Britney and Kevin tied the knot in September 2004, in front of just close friends and family, which we guess is quite cute. What we can't get our head around is the fact that the couple made their guests pay for their own alcohol. We could understand if they'd invited the world and its mother - but there were only 15 guests, and Britney's not exactly short on cash.

Wedding heaven: Victoria Adams and David Beckham
Some may think that Victoria and David Beckham's wedding ceremony in 1999 was so over-the-top it pretty much set the gold standard for tacky celebrity weddings. Here at handbag.com, we think differently. Victoria wore a champagne-coloured Vera Wang dress with a 5ft train and jewelled tiara, while David wore an Everest suit. In attendance were Mel B, Mel C, Emma Bunton, Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville, and Sir Bobby Charlton to name but-a-few. The most romantic moment saw the release of a single white dove after the couple exchanged their vows in the grounds of Luttrelstown Castle near Dublin. The couple also had a coat of arms designed, which appeared on their wedding invitations and on purple silk flags which flapped from the castle's battlements. But what they'll always be remembered for are their thrones, which they sat on once the ceremony was over. Over the top, but amazing. And hey, they must have done something right, the Beckhams are still going strong.

Wedding hell: Liza Minelli and David Guest
It's not usual wedding etiquette to expect guests to walk through a metal detector to ensure no one's sneaking a camera into your wedding ceremony. But you probably should expect the norm if you're going to Liza Minelli and David Guest's wedding. Guests included Diana Ross (who we reckon could have hidden a camera in her hair), Robert Wagner, Helena Christensen, Lauren Bacall, Brian May and Graham Norton. Liza turned up a whole hour early for the ceremony, Natalie Cole sung Unforgettable as they exchanged vows, and Michael Jackson was best man. Bridesmaids included Liz Taylor, Mia Farrow, Martine McCutcheon, Gina Lollobrigida and Chaka Khan. We just wish we'd been there.

Wedding heaven: Liz Hurley
When Liz Hurley got married she was escorted down the aisle by a troop of angelic children wearing white. But that was just her English-style wedding. She then went on to have another, traditionally Indian, ceremony. Marrying textile heir Arun Nayar in 2007, the second ceremony took place on a beachfront Bungalow in Mumbai with guests including Bollywood actress and Celebrity Big Brother star Shilpa Shetty and Pakistani cricketer Imran Khan.

Wedding hell: Katie Price and Peter Andre
For her first doomed wedding Katie Price married Peter Andre at Highclere Castle in Berkshire. Guests included Paul Gascoigne, Mike Read, Jenni Bond, Jennifer Ellison and bridesmaids Sarah Harding, Kerry Katona and Michelle Heaton. Peter wore a white designer suit and sparkly silver waistcoat, while Katie wore a strapless pink princess-style gown with fake diamonds and a 25ft long train. The couple's first dance was to a recording of themselves singing A Whole New World, and Katie arrived in a pink, pumpkin-shaped carriage. It was total insania.

Wedding heaven: Lara Stone and David Walliams
Lara Stone and David Walliams shocked everyone by having a very traditional wedding at London hotel Claridges in May 2010, before Lara changed into a gold mini-dress to go to the reception at Shoreditch House in London. Stone, 26, wore a £30,000 glowing cream gown by Ricardo Tisci Of Givenchy, which featured gold brocade and a lace-trimmed train, and she wept as she and Walliams, 38, said their vows. Guests were given champagne and canapés before walking into the ballroom of the five-star Mayfair hotel, which had been filled to the brim with £10,000 worth of white roses. The couple jetted off to Paris for their honeymoon. Nice.

Wedding hell: Mariah Carey and Tommy Mottola
Nothing says tacky like copying another celebrity's wedding. But that's exactly what Mariah Carey did when she got hitched to Producer Tommy Mottola in 1993. Mariah insisted on modelling the entire wedding on Prince Charles and Princess Diana's ceremony. Mariah copied everything from Diana's tiara to the wedding nuptials, and said that the reason behind doing so was that she wanted to know what such a glamorous affair would feel like. Creepy. Mariah then went on to wear her wedding dress in her video for We Belong Together in 2005.

Wedding heaven: Jack White and Karen Elson
There's one way to keep the media away from your wedding ceremony, and that's to hold the ceremony deep in the Brazilian rainforest. Which is exactly what The White Stripes' Jack White and his fiancé Karen Elson did in 2005. A statement posted on the White Stripe's website said, "Karen Elson and Jack White were married yesterday on the confluence of three rivers - the river Negro, the Solimones and the Amazon... by a traditional shaman priest on a canoe at the exact point where the three rivers meet. The ceremony was immediately followed by a blessing by a priest at a Catholic cathedral called Igreja Matric in the historic city of Manaos." The Stripes drummer Meg White was the maid of honour. Sounds idyllic to us.
