Director Kathryn Bigelow became the first woman to win the best directing Oscar, on a triumphant night for her film The Hurt Locker. The Iraq war drama won six awards on a glitzy Oscars night in Los Angeles including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. Much was made of the battle between Bigelow and ex-husband James Cameron in the run up to the awards but while Camerons epic, Avatar, won at the box office (taking a record-breaking £1.32bn), the Academy judges went for Bigelows film, with box office takings of just £9.9m, making it lowest grossing film ever to win Best Picture. It's the moment of a lifetime," Bigelow said when accepting her award, before praising her fellow nominees who have inspired me for decades.
Elsewhere, it was fifth time lucky for Jeff Bridges, who won the Leading Actor Oscar for his role in Crazy Heart, while Sandra Bullock scooped the Leading Actress award for her portrayal of a gutsy, suburban mum in The Blind Side.
