The Hips Don't Lie singer has put her successful music career to one side in order to study Ancient History at the University of California.
Shakira's tutor is probably not a fan of pop music as he reportedly failed to recognise his famous student and was stunned to find out her true identity.
Lecturer Robert Cleve said: 'She just looked like an ordinary student. She didn't act like a big celebrity or anything. I was really impressed with how intelligent she was.
'She told me she was visiting from Colombia and that she was just doing this for her own enlightenment and enjoyment.'
According to her manager Fifi Kurzman, 30-year-old Shakira has been studying in private for years, taking tutorials on the history and language of each country she visits.
