Madonna is to play American socialite Wallis Simpson in a new film after becoming fascinated with her story, sources have told The Sun newspaper. Wallis' romance with the future King caused a scandal, Edward was banned by his family from marrying the twice-divorced beauty, but gave up the throne to be with her in 1936. Madonna is said to have told friends that she "sees similarities" between herself and Wallis. "Madonna sees Wallis Simpson as her next big film project,” an insider revealed. "She is as passionate about it as she was about playing Eva Peron in Evita. Madonna said she is fascinated about this American commoner who refused to conform or offer explanations for her tangled love life. It was all systems go until the divorce, when everything was put on the back burner. When things in her life settle down this year, she's keen to get things going again."
