Jack Tweed jailed

Jade Goody's widower Jack Tweed has been sentenced to 12 weeks in prison for assaulting a taxi driver.

Jack Tweed has been jailed for 12 weeks for assaulting taxi driver Stephen Wilkins in May last year. Jade Goody’s widower had denied the attack but was found guilty last month after the jury heard that Tweed, on bail at the time for a separate offence of hitting a 16-year-old boy with a golf club, became aggressive after being asked to pay his taxi fare in advance before grabbing Wilkins in a headlock and threatening to stab him. "To say that he is a changed man since May 2008 is perhaps an understatement,” Jack’s lawyer Tania Panagiotopoulou explained to the judge when appealing for a lenient sentence. "He has endured, with dignity and maturity, very difficult personal circumstances that have been well-documented." But magistrates said they had decided to jail Tweed despite considering his personal change. “We have borne in mind the recent change in your personal circumstances,” Margaret Webb, chairman of the magistrates, said. “And have reflected this in the length of the sentence, which would otherwise have been 18 weeks." Tweed's solicitor, George Kampanella, said his family were "considering the prospects of an appeal".
