Helen Mirren responds to date rape uproar

Oscar winner Dame Helen Mirren has asked people to read her full interview with GQ magazine after her comments on date rape have caused controversy. As well as admitting she had been a victim of date rape, quotes taken from the interview have appeared in the press with the actress apparently suggesting women who have been date raped should not take their attackers to court as it would be difficult to press charges against someone they had planned on being sexually active with. “I don't think she (a female rape victim) can have that man into court under those circumstances.” However, the actress has now criticised the media’s “sensational” take on her comments and asked people to read the interview in full. “Helen Mirren does not dispute the accuracy of statements attributed to her in an upcoming GQ article,” A statement released by her representative, Stan Rosenfield, says. “She merely asks that people read the article in its entirety before drawing conclusions. If they do that, she says, their conclusions will likely be far less sweeping and sensational than those drawn by some in the popular press. She does not wish to qualify any of her remarks. She just wants to avoid having them presented in inflammatory language.”
