Britney Spears has spoken out about negative press reports in the Australian media about her recent live dates. Several newspapers have reported “hundreds” of fans walked out after just three songs of Britney’s gig last week at the Perth Burswood Dome in disgust at her lip-synching and “lacklustre” performance.
"I hear there is a lot of controversy in the media about my show," Britney said in a short statement to press. “Some reporters have said they love it and some don't. I came to Australia for my fans." Britney’s promoter, Paul Dainty, has called reports of the walkouts the “biggest lie I've ever heard” but added that Britney has received “thousands of positive messages” of support.
"I'm so angry. We can take heat if there's something wrong and people can review shows badly - that's something you have to live with – but to say people stormed out of the show was an absolute fabrication. Britney is aware of all this and she's extremely upset by it - she's a human being," he told the Australian newspaper, before saying it is well known parts of Britney’s show were mimed. "It's been all over the internet for nine months – this show is about an incredible spectacle, which it is." Tickets for Britney’s Australian shows ranged from £110 to £830. The singer is performing 15 dates across the country as part of her Circus tour, which kicked off in March.
However, while Britney’s camp has claimed it’s now common for pop stars to lip-synch during live shows, the Musicians Union Of Australia has said concert goers should be told what they’re paying for. "It's not right that people are going to the concert when they are being misled," the union's federal secretary, Terry Noone, told ABC News Online. "That's the issue. It's not about music, it's about false advertising. There should be a message saying if things are going to be lip-synced or mimed so that people know what they're buying."
