All hell broke loose in the Celebrity Big Brother house this January when celeb fish wife Jade Goody called fellow housemate and eventual winner Shilpa Shetty “Shilpa Poppadom”. More than 30,000 people complained to Ofcom the independent regulator, The Carphone Warehouse pulled their sponsorship of the show and The Perfume Shop refused to sell Jade’s perfume (who on earth would want to smell like Jade Goody, anyway?). Even though CBB had its biggest ratings ever during the scandal, producers decided to call off 2008’s planned show. Jade rightly got a kicking in the press before visiting Delhi to apologise to the entire Indian nation.

In May, infamous heiress Paris Hilton was sentenced to 45 days in jail for violating her probation following an earlier DUI conviction. Just three days into her sentence, Paris was let out on medical grounds, but was frog-marched back to prison by a judge a few days later. In the end she served 22 days. Speaking to CNN’s Larry King the day after her release she said, “It was a very traumatic experience.” More traumatic than her knickerless nights on the town with Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears, we wonder?

On 26 August Hollywood star Owen Wilson was rushed to hospital after a suicide attempt. Wilson had been dating his You, Me And Dupree co-star Kate Hudson, but when they split in June he was said to be devastated – a photo of Kate and her new boyfriend kissing seemed to have driven him over the edge. Courtney Love blamed comedian Steve Coogan for Wilson’s depressed state, saying Steve had dragged Owen into a spiral of partying and drugs.

As this was his second DUI, he was sentenced to 48 days in prison and was incarcerated on 5 December – Christmas dinner in the slammer for him then. Other celebs who were arrested for drinking and driving this year were Lindsay Lohan, Ray Liotta and Lost star Daniel Dae Kim. Somebody ought to explain to these guys that just because they’re famous, it doesn’t meant they won’t kill someone if the get behind the wheel drunk.
