Oscar winners 2010

monique winner of the 2010 oscar for actress in a supporting role

Actor In A Supporting Role?: Christoph Waltz in Inglourious Basterds
Nominees:
Matt Damon in Invictus?
Woody Harrelson in The Messenger?
Christopher Plummer in The Last Station?
Stanley Tucci in The Lovely Bones?
handbag.com prediction: Christoph Waltz
Not many actors could pitch a performance as the dastardly Nazi Colonel Hans Landa as brilliantly as Christoph Waltz. He’d rightly been winning all the best supporting actor awards so far this year. And that didn't stop at the Oscars.

Actress In A Supporting Role: Mo’Nique in Precious: Based On The Novel Push By Sapphire
Nominees:
Penélope Cruz in Nine?
Vera Farmiga in Up In The Air?
Maggie Gyllenhaal in Crazy Heart?
Anna Kendrick in Up In The Air?
handbag.com prediction: Mo’Nique’s performance in Precious has swept all before her so far this award’s season, even beating Brits Anne-Marie Duff and Kristin Scott Thomas at the Baftas. The question was not if she'd win the Oscar, but whether she’d shave her legs beforehand!

Actor In A Leading Role: Jeff Bridges in Crazy Heart?
Nominees:
George Clooney in Up In The Air?
Colin Firth in A Single Man?
Morgan Freeman in Invictus?
Jeremy Renner in The Hurt Locker
handbag.com prediction: Jeff Bridges
Although Colin Firth picked up the Bafta in this category last month, Bridges had already won the Golden Globe for his role as grizzled country and western singer in Crazy Heart. With four previous Oscar nominations to his name (for The Last Picture Show in 1971, Thunderbolt And Lightfoot in 1974, Starman in 1984 and, most recently, The Contender in 2000) the feeling among insiders was that this would finally be Bridges’ year. And their feelings, and ours, were right!

Actress In A Leading Role?: Sandra Bullock in The Blind Side?
Nominees:
Helen Mirren in The Last Station?
Carey Mulligan in An Education?
Gabourey Sidibe in Precious: Based On The Novel Push By Sapphire?
Meryl Streep in Julie & Julia
handbag.com prediction: Sandra Bullock
Although The Blind Side missed out on the Bafta (it wasn’t eligible for inclusion), Sandra Bullock has won all the other major awards so far this season. Based on the true story of a young man’s journey from an impoverished beginnings in foster care, to becoming a top American footballer, all thanks to the help of a gutsy suburban mum it’s proved popular with the American judging panels and nothing changed at the Oscars. Should have also been honoured for a refreshing, funny and honest speech.

Directing: The Hurt Locker - Kathryn Bigelow
Nominees:
Avatar - James Cameron
Inglourious Basterds - Quentin Tarantino
Precious: Based On The Novel Push By Sapphire - Lee Daniels
Up In The Air - Jason Reitman
handbag.com prediction: Kathryn Bigelow
If this was down to box office business success then James Cameron would have had the Oscar wrapped up long ago. And by winning the Golden Globe, he certainly made the early running but there was a shift of opinion recently. The Hurt Locker dominated the Baftas, taking five awards in total including best director. No doubt Avatar is an incredible achievement, but we think it’s reliance on special effects ultimately prevented James Cameron winning and left the door open for his ex-wife Bigelow.

Best Picture?: The Hurt Locker - Mark Boal, Kathyrn Bigelow and Greg Shapiro
Nominees:
Avatar - James Cameron and Jon Landau, Producers
District 9 - Peter Jackson and Carolynne Cunningham, Producers
An Education - Finola Dwyer and Amanda Posey, Producers
Inglourious Basterds - Lawrence Bender, Producer
Precious: - Lee Daniels, Sarah Siegel-Magness and Gary Magness, Producers
A Serious Man - Joel Coen and Ethan Coen, Producers?
Up - Jonas Rivera, Producer
Up In The Air - Daniel Dubiecki, Ivan Reitman and Jason Reitman, Producers
handbag.com prediction: With all the pre-awards hype focusing on former couple James Cameron and Kathryn Bigelow’s chances, we figured the road was clear for someone else to sneak up and win. So we backed Precious: Based On The Novel Push By Sapphire to win the top honours but were delighted to be wrong.

Animated Feature Film?: Up - Pete Docter
Nominees:
Coraline - Henry Selick?
Fantastic Mr Fox - Wes Anderson?
The Princess And The Frog - John Musker and Ron Clements?
The Secret Of Kells - Tomm Moore?
handbag.com prediction: Up
With previous winners like Toy Story, Monsters, Inc, The Incredibles and Cars, they should really rename this award Pixar Film Of The Year. While Coraline looked great and Fantastic Mr Fox was highly inventive, but there was only ever going to be one winner.
