Oscar Nominees 2008

Film, celebrity news, celebrity pictures, oscars, hollywood No COuntry for Old Men

The Cohen Brothers\' No Country For Old Men (pictured) and There Will Be Blood starring Daniel Day-Lewis lead the 2008 Oscars nominations with eight each. Although thanks to the writers’ strike, no one knows whether the Oscars will even happen this year.

So here’s a list of the main nominations (don’t worry, we’ve skipped all the endless Best Soundtrack and Special Effects Direction in an Animated Short style ones) and made our predictions. Bring on the arguments over the potential winners!

Performance by an actor in a leading role

Johnny Depp in Sweeney Todd The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

Tommy Lee Jones in In the Valley of Elah

Viggo Mortensen in Eastern Promises

Past Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis is shoe in thanks to his powerhouse performance as a turn of the century oilman. He’s already won the Golden Globe for his performance, don’t bet against him repeating his win on Oscar night. Nice to see Johnny Depp and George Clooney get a mention too.

Performance by an actor in a supporting role

Javier Bardem (pictured)  in No Country For Old Men

Philip Seymour Hoffman in Charlie Wilson’s War

Hal Holbrook in Into The Wild

Tom Wilkinson in Michael Clayton

No Country For Old Men looks like it’ll be the big winner at this year’s awards. Everyone who’s seen it raves about the film and also Javier Bardem’s menacing portrayal of the film’s psychotic baddie, Anton Chigurh. Another Golden Globe winner, the smart money’s on him making it two out of two.

Performance by an actress in a leading role

Film, celebrity news, celebrity pictures, oscars, hollywood Ellen Page Cate Blanchett in Elizabeth: The Golden Age

Julie Christie in Away From Her

Marion Cotillard in La Vie en Rose

Laura Linney in The Savages

Ellen Page (pictured) in Juno

Though Julie Christie won the Golden Globe for her portrayal of a married woman suffering with Alzheimer’s we’re going for Ellen Page’s sweet and comic turn as a young girl dealing with an unexpected pregnancy in Juno.

Performance by an actress in a supporting role

Ruby Dee in American Gangster

Saoirse Ronan in Atonement

Amy Ryan in Gone Baby Gone

Tilda Swinton in Michael Clayton

Though the Golden Globes themselves were a bit of fiasco this year, their voting panel were right on the money with their winners. Cate Blanchett rightly got the nod for her part as Bob Dylan in this innovative biopic and should do the same on Oscar night.

Achievement in directing

Film, celebrity news, celebrity pictures, oscars, hollywood No Country For Old Men The Diving Bell And The Butterfly, Julian Schnabel

Juno, Jason Reitman

Michael Clayton, Tony Gilroy

No Country For Old Men (pictured), Joel Coen and Ethan Coen

There Will Be Blood, Paul Thomas Anderson

Ethan and Joel Cohen have long been celebrated for their original and quirky films and many critics believe their latest is the best work yet. Telling the story of a hunter who stumbles across $2million and decides to keep it regardless of the consequences No Country For Old Men should bag them the recognition their work deserves.

Best documentary feature

Film, celebrity news, celebrity pictures, oscars, hollywood Sicko No End In Sight, Charles Ferguson and Audrey Marrs

Operation Homecoming: Writing the Wartime Experience, Richard E Robbins

Sicko, Michael Moore and Meghan O’Hara

Taxi To The Dark Side, Alex Gibney and Eva Orner

War/Dance, Andrea Nix Fine and Sean Fine

Not many people who saw it can forget Michael Moore’s inflammatory speech against President Bush when he won an Oscar for Bowling For Columbine. But critics believe his latest documentary, Sicko, an angry attack on the US health service, is even more hard hitting.

Best motion picture of the year

Film,celebrity news,celebrity pictures,oscars,hollywood Michael Clayton

Atonement

Juno

Michael Clayton (George Clooney pictured)

No Country For Old Men

There Will Be Blood

The big one. With the success we’ve predicted for it in other categories you’d think No Country For Old Men would be our pick, but we’re putting out money on Michael Clayton, the story of a dirty lawyer who uncovers the biggest case of his career, to take the honours on the night.
