Foos vs Babyshambles

The fabulous Foo Fighters opened the show with a performance of their new track, The Pretender and a cover of the Sex Pistols\' classic, God Save The Queen. Hours before the event, the Foos\' Dave Grohl told reporters he had banned Pete Doherty from his personal bar at the awards, because he didn\'t want to be responsible for corrupting him. "I\'ve heard he\'s clean and I don\'t want to lead him astray," said Dave. "I\'m challenging everyone to a drinking contest and with Pete it might lead to another thing or two."

Double trouble

Avril Lavigne, who also performed at the EMAs, was the surprise success story of the evening, picking up the award for most addictive track, Girlfriend, and solo artist of 2007. During her acceptance speech she said, “It’s an honour to have you guys all the way in Europe listening to my music. It’s crazy.”

F1, no fun

Formula 1 star, Lewis Hamilton, presented Avril with her first award of the night, after missing out on the chance to chauffer Snoop Dogg on to the main stage at the beginning of the show. Apparently Snoop had it all planned out but F1 bosses put the kybosh on it, saying that Lewis wasn’t allowed to drive anything other than a Mercedes…

UK boys do good

The other big winners of the evening were those lovely Devonshire boys, Muse. The band picked up two prizes, including best headliner and best UK and Irish act, beating off stiff competition from the Foo Fighters, Beyonce Knowles and Justin Timberlake

Reformed characters

The Babyshambles boys were on their best behaviour last night, much to the surprise of pretty much everyone. Not only did the band turn up early for rehearsals, but they also put on one of the best performances of the whole evening. Pete Doherty, who was given a suspended jail sentence earlier this week over drug and motoring offences, told reporters on the red carpet: “It\'s a whole turnaround in the Babyshambles philosophy!”

Wobbly Winehouse

The not so reformed Amy Winehouse was on hand to provide the only uproar of the proceedings, when she tottered somewhat drunkenly on to the stage to accept the artists’ choice award. Amy could only manage a one word acceptance speech of “Fanks” before wandering off and leaving the German crowd booing her lack of gratitude.

Dirty girl

Later in the show, Amy Winehouse caused more chaos by disappearing just before she was due to perform live on stage. After playing an emergency three and a half minute video to plug the gap, Amy was found loitering in the ladies’ loos. When she finally made her way on to the stage she gobbed all over it like a right little chav, then proceeded to slur her way through her hit song, Back To Black. Nice.

Booby call

Pussycat Dolls singer, Nicole Scherzinger put in an eye-popping performance during her duet with the Black Eyed Peas’ Will.I.Am. For some reason Nicole felt it necessary to keep grabbing her left breast throughout the entire song, leaving fans wondering if her boob was making some kind of desperate bid for freedom or whether she was trying to prevent a ‘wardrobe malfunction’.

Bad hair day

Joss Stone was on hand to provide the comedy ensemble of the evening. Lord knows what that outfit was about, and the hair! It looked like she’d had it sewn in. Very odd indeed.

And the award for the best waterworks goes to...

Nelly Furtado provided the obligatory teared-up speech as she accepted the award for Album Of The Year. "I know I always cry but this actually means so much to me,” said the emotional star, “Thank you so much, I love you."
