Katy Perry
Katy Perry opened the ceremony dressed in all-American style as an American footballer. Not known as one to go down without putting on a show, she performed ‘I Kissed A Girl’ while riding a giant cherry chapstick. As long as she’s not brandishing knives- we’re happy. Perry took home the New Act Award on the night.

If I Were A Boy
Performances were kicked off with Beyonce Knowles banging out new single If I Were A Boy, dressed in what we can only describe as a space-age suit. The performance was delightfully antic-free, except for the metal glove that she seems to have been sporting recently.

Kanye West
Kanye West took to the stage and gave a full-hearted performance of Love Lockdown before being joined by Estelle, 28, for their international hit American Boy.

Politics
30 Seconds To Mars’ Jared Leto, who won both the Rock Out and Video Stars awards, had the crowd standing in honour of newly-elected president, saying, “Let’s hear it for Barack Obama.” Katy Perry quipped, “Maybe Europe will love us again now.”

Britney Spears
Britney Spears followed on from her victory at the MTV Awards last night, as she took home two EMAs. The star, who’s said to be turning her life around, won Act of 2008 and Album Of The Year for Blackout. Britney beat off the likes of Leona Lewis and Rihanna for the award, but unfortunately couldn’t be there on the night to pick it up.

Sir Paul McCartney
The Beatles’ Sir Paul McCartney was presented MTV’s Ultimate Legend Award by U2 frontman Bono. The Elevation singer said, “In the world of rock and roll, the Beatles were the Big Bang.” The award recognised Sir Paul as one of the most formative influences on the global music scene and as a founding father in helping Liverpool to earn its recent accolade as Most Musical City in the UK.

Rick Astley
The most unexpected winner of the night was pop star Rick Astley, who took the Best Act Ever award after a public vote. His 1980s track Never Gonna Give You Up has a newfound following on the internet as a result of ‘Rickrolling’, which means clicking through a link to be taken to the video - which would automatically vote for the pop star to win.
