Amy Winehouse and Mum
Even before last night’s show this year’s Grammy Awards have been dominated by Amy Winehouse. First it was the question of whether she’d be able to clean up sufficiently to go (she did) and then if US officials would grant her a visa to attend (they didn’t) with all that drama no one gave a thought to her chances of winning any of the six awards she was up for. Always the jewel in the US music award show’s crown the Grammys finally took place last night at LA’s Staples Centre, here are a few of it’s biggest moments…

Amy Winehouse wins five Grammy Awards
Thanks to her visa refusal Amy couldn’t be there in person last night but did manage to show up for a live video link up and it’s just as well she did. Nominated for six awards Amy won an incredible five on the night - Record of the year, Song of the year, Best new artist, Best female pop vocal performance and Best pop vocal album – and also made the best acceptance speech complete with an Ali G-esque “My Blake incarcerated” shout out. Excellent.

Beyonce duets with Tina Turner
For years people have compared Beyonce to Tina Turner and at the Grammys last night we were given a good look on how they matched when they finally shared a stage for barn storming version of Ike and Tina classic Proud Mary. Predictably it brought the house down.

Foo Fighters barn storming performance
Foo Fighters’ album Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace might have won the rock nice guys the nod for Best rock album but it was their performance of their hit The Pretender that really made the headlines. Joined on a special stage set up outside the Staples Centre by Led Zepplin man John Paul Jones and an orchestra which included competition winners who’d sent audition vids to youtube. Had they’d have been playing under a roof it would’ve blown off.

Kanye West sings Hey Mama
Second only to Amy Winehouse in the awards haul stakes, Kanye picked up an impressive four awards – Best rap solo performance, Best rap performance by a duo, Best rap song and Best rap album. But like the Foos it was his performances that really caught the eye. First with his futuristic, Daft Punk featuring version of Stronger but the house really came down for his ode to his mother Hey Mama, who tragically died last year.

Producer of the year Mark Ronson
Being that he’s now a star in his own right thanks to the success his Versions album Mark picked up the award for his work with Amy Winehouse and Lily Allen. While he’s apparently fallen out Lily now he’s planning more knob twiddling on Amy’s next album, if they can repeat the success they’ve both enjoyed more awards nights like this will be coming their way.

Rihanna\'s new look
Though she picked up only one award Rihanna made sure she was still big in everyone’s thoughts at the Grammys thanks to her feathered dress and the new do she sported for her performance of Umbrella and Don’t Stop The Music.
