Actors Jim Broadbent and Brenda Blethyn pose backstage with Jim\'s \'Best Actor\' award for his performace in Channel 4\'s \'Longford\'. Many people expected John Simm would win that category for \'Life on Mars\', including Broadbent who later said he was both, \'very surprised and very shaken\'

Little and large

bafta awards, celebrity gossip,TV,celebrity news, joan rivers Joan Rivers and Stephen Merchant Baftas
Joan Rivers had a bit of a lark about with the lovely (and exceptionally tall) Stephen Merchant backstage after he was forced to collect the award for \'Best Comedy Performance\' on behalf of an absent Ricky Gervais.

Merchant was also nominated for the award and seemed deservedly non-plussed as he took the stage and said, \'He could have mentioned this before. Talk about rubbing salt into the wound. I\'m sure he would like me to say I\'ve been robbed, and I would agree. And it\'s not like he hasn\'t got enough already.\'

Making an entrance

bafta awards, celebrity gossip,TV,celebrity news Philip Glenister and Graham Norton - Baftas \'07
This year\'s rather controversial BAFTA TV awards got off to a roaring start when host Graham Norton roared up to the red carpet in a brown mark three Cortina, driven by Philip Glenister - who played that fabulous rogue, DCI Gene Hunt, in the equally fabulous TV series, \'Life on Mars\'

Unbelievably, Phil wasn\'t nominated for an award, and the entire show very nearly went home with nothing, until it was revealed that it had scooped the \'Pioneer Audience Award\' - well done \'the people\' for recognising good quality entertainment!
