Brit Nominations 2009

The Brit Awards are being held on Wednesday 18 February, and broadcast live on ITV, at Earls Court in London. We take a look at this year’s nominations. Who would you like to see win?

handbag.com’s Brit prediction: James Morrison. Ian Brown deserves an award for having the guts to use music to comment on society, but we think that James Morrison is more likely to get the award for his melodic harmonies.  Also worth a mention is the fact that bookmakers suspended all bets on the ceremony after a flurry of bets for Paul to win suggested that the winners list may had been leaked.  So Paul could be the bloke to put your money on right now - if you were allowed to that is.

British Female Solo Artist

Adele
Beth Rowley
Duffy
Estelle
MIA

handbag.com’s prediction: Adele. She has one of the most distinctive voices around – and  is great live – and, although the same can be said for Duffy, she’s already had huge success and we think it’s time for someone else to have a go. We’re not too sure about Beth Rowley, and Estelle’s only really known for one song (about some American Boy) and although we love MIA, Paper Planes, and her outfits at last week’s Grammys, we think she might be a little too ‘out there’.

handbag.com’s prediction: The Ting Tings. Since stepping into our lives just under a year ago The Ting Tings have redefined our love for pop music, meaning it’s no longer shameful to admit that you have a huge pop stack hidden under your bed. And we love them for it.
 

British Group

handbag.com’s prediction: Take That. Although we think Girls Aloud deserve to win this award, simply for being the only girl group nominated, we think it may swing in the favour of Take That – who have reformed and had one of the biggest comebacks ever!

British Live Act

The Verve

handbag.com’s prediction: Coldplay. If you want a live act and you want to know you’re going to get your money’s worth, Coldplay are the band to see – and for that reason they’re almost definitely going to win this gong. And now they’ve announced that they’re going to be supported by Girls Aloud, there’s even more reason to see them.

Duffy – Mercy
Girls Aloud – The Promise
Leona Lewis – Better In Time
Scouting For Girls – Heartbeat

handbag.com’s prediction: Mercy. From casting our eye over this list, one single stands out – Mercy. Although the other songs were all huge, and Viva La Vida and Heartbeat did so well, Mercy could be the soundtrack for 2008 it was so massive.

The Ting Tings – We Started Nothing

handbag.com’s prediction: Coldplay. Yet again, we think that Coldplay are going to be taking home this award on Wednesday night, mainly because of their success across the pond. The Ting Tings album is great, but won’t be a classic.

handbag.com’s predictions: Jay-Z. Forgetting Glastonburygate (where he actually proved his critics wrong), Jay-Z really ought to win this award. He’s one of the biggest selling hip hop artists of all times, and we just don’t want Kanye ‘If I didn’t win an award then it was fixed’ West to get one.

handbag.com’s predictions: Katy Perry. Although we’d really love Beyoncé to get one – her latest album is amazing, you really need to get it and listen to Halo or Sweet Dreams – we think that it might go to Katy Perry. The I Kissed A Girl singer’s album is full of catchy songs, and she does put on a good show. I mean, can you imagine Beyoncé jumping into a huge birthday cake, or dressing up as a Christmas Tree? I think not…
