What's the story?
Were you wondering what happened to Hackney's very own Leona Lewis? Soon after her X Factor win last year she was whisked to the States to work with several top producers on her debut album, Spirit. And she had a lot to prove after American music mogul Clive Davis told Simon Cowell, "I think you might have the next Whitney on your hands!"
What's to like?
Spirit is a very well rounded album for a debut offering from Leona. You can hear that she has been in the studio for a long time with some of America's hottest producers.
There is quite a range from I Will Be with moments of American Idol's Carrie Underwood, a nod to Timbaland with Whatever It Takes and a charming cover of Roberta Flack's The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face.
What's not to like?
It's a bit ballad-heavy. We'd have loved to have heard the full range of songs Leona showcased in the X Factor each week. And although all the tracks are beautifully sung we were desperate to see some more personality revealed. We were also disappointed she was given Kelly Clarkson's No 1 as her first single - come on, Simon, give this very talented new star some new material.
Who would like it?
If you're a fan or Whitney, Mariah and want to see a receptionist from Hackney give them a run for their money then you'll love it - Leona has a fantastic voice with a stunning range. It's also a great CD for a girls' night in.
Verdict
A competent first album with some great moments, we can't wait to see her grow into a huge star. The next Ms Houston or Ms Carey? We're not sure yet. They have achieved diva status already, and Leona Lewis certainly has the tools to get there too.
