Having sacked their first manager, signed with Simon Fuller, recorded Wannabe and effectively taken over the world, the first few years together were pretty eventful for the Spice Girls. But their attendance at the 1997 MTV award really proved they’d become a global phenomenon.

Spice Girls - dolls 97
Thanks to a small piece in Top Of The Pops Magazine the previous year Mel B, C, Emma, Victoria and Geri had become Scary, Sporty, Baby, Posh and Ginger Spice. Armed with catchy nicknames, the band launched the biggest merchandise and tie-in range pop had ever known. First on the shelves were their dolls. If you happen to still have one (mint condition, in box obviously) they’re going for a whopping £13 today on eBay!
Mixing with the big guns

Spice Girls - Queen 97
With six consecutive number ones and two chart topping albums the band were in demand wherever they went and were mixing with the hoi polloi and loving it. They planted smackers on Nelson Mandela and pinched Prince Charles’ bum, fortunately they behaved themselves when meeting the queen.
Changing minds

Spice Girls - Brits 98
Originally written off by the credible music press as, one hit wonders, a flash in the pan at best, after band’s third number one album people had to change their tune and the awards followed. Even the then snooty Brit Awards had to get on board. Oh and nice outfits girls.

Spice Girls - World cup 98
Buoyed by the success of their (awful) film Spiceworld the girls were an obvious choice to be asked to sing on the England team’s official World Cup ’98 song. But it was to be their first taste of failure. Their effort, On Top Of The World with Ian McCulloch, was pipped to the top by an unofficial re-working of Three Lions On Shirt.

Spice Girls - Indianopolis 98
In May ’98 and just about to head out on a huge US tour Geri left the band. A quick “Sadly I would like to confirm that I have left the Spice Girls. This is because of differences between us.” Statement and she was gone but it didn’t slow the band down and the tour went ahead as planned.
Solo Spice

Spice Girls - Fergie 98
Woah, easy Fergie! Back in London the band were still in demand but the girls were all starting to flirt with solo careers. Mel C had the most success, her collaboration with Bryan Adams, When You’re Gone, sold bucketloads and first single Goin’ Down was well. People didn’t even mind her haircut.

In December ’99 the band attended the launch party after they became the first group since the Beatles in 1964 to be made into Madame Tussauds Rock Circus wax works. What they should have been doing was sacking the stylist.
End of an era

Spice Girls - Stockholm 2000
The writing was on the wall for the band in November 2000 when the girls last album, Forever, lost it’s album chart battle with Westlife and though their comeback single Holler/Let Love Lead The Way did hit the top spot the girls decided enough was enough and went their separate ways.

Stop the press – it’s all back on. After a couple of years of rumours the band showed they still knew how to get a bit of press when they confirmed they were getting back together for one last hurrah of a tour and a greatest hits album.

Anyone worried that they still had it needn’t have when tickets for the band’s world tour sold out in just 38 seconds. The first look at the reformed group happened at the Victoria’s Secrets Fashion show on Nov 15 and though the girls lip synched their way through two songs they went down a storm.
