We’re developing a serious girl crush on Saoirse Ronan, star of new action film Hanna. Saoirse first shot to fame as 13-year-old Briony Tallis in Atonement opposite James McAvoy and Keira Knightley. After bagging an Oscar nomination for Atonement (Best Supporting Actress), she went on to share screen time with several Hollywood heavyweights, including Colin Farrell, Susan Sarandon and Ed Harris. And she’s still only 17!
This time round Saoirse stars with Cate Blanchett and Eric Bana as the eponymous Hanna, a 16-year-old assassin being tracked across Europe by a ruthless intelligent agent (Blanchett).
Fortunately, working with Cate Blanchett herself was a somewhat more pleasant experience than that.
“It was fantastic to work with Cate. My dad [Paul Ronan]’s an actor as well and worked with her on a film a few years ago called Veronica Guerin.
“She’s the type of actor who’s very diverse she can kind of do anything and it’ll still be brilliant. She cares about what she does, she’s very professional and she’s a lovely woman as well.”
Saoirse also hopes that young people will learn something from the unlikely heroine of the film.
“Hanna is very strong but she’s also a bit of a misfit and she’s not cool at all, and so I like that. She doesn’t fit in and she’s a bit of an alien and that’s cool.
“It would be great if young people come to see this and take away the idea that someone who doesn’t fit in can accomplish things.”
