What’s it about? An illegal immigrant living in LA holds down a job as a gardener, while trying to get his son away from gangs and stay under the radar from immigration officials. When he finds the money to buy himself a truck, he sees how their American dream can be fulfilled, but, of course things aren’t as plain sailing as they should be.
Who’s in it? Demian Bichir, José Julián
Handbag hearts…We defy any audience member not to leave A Better Life pondering the things you take for granted on a day-to-day basis. The character development is so slow burning in this film that you become totally invested in their fate as the film progresses. By the end you’re left gasping in horror as Dad Carlos Galindo good nature leads him to make naïve mistakes that you know will end in tears. The performances are brilliant, cinematography astounding, and you’re left feeling like you’ve just watched a docu-drama about immigration in America rather than a film from the director of About A Boy.
Should you see it: A whole-hearted yes from us. This film is poignant, moving, and will really make you consider the way you live your own life and you accountability for other people’s happiness.
