What's the story?
Bollywood's the word at this glorious, technicolour, bejewelled Indian restaurant. Sitaaray means 'star' in Hindi and the walls appropriately feature different film themes – heroes, heroines, baddies and lovers – with framed photos and film posters covering every available inch of space. If that's not enough, tiny flat-screen televisions showing Bollywood classics are also scattered around. Deep-red walls, mezzanine seating and the scent of joss sticks also add to the opulent, fun atmosphere.
Liking…
Jobs, flats, relationships – the major life choices we seem to make easily, but choosing a starter and main (will it be too much if we go for two seafood dishes?) always poses a conundrum. Imagine our outright joy when we were told that we didn't have to choose, but would be given little portions (with more if we so wished) of everything on the menu. As we'd eat canapés for dinner every night if given the choice, this truly made us happy diners. It also stops that annoying habit of stealing food from your date's plate.
Perfect for...
The booth seating and lively atmosphere makes it great for groups, as does the varied and plentiful menu. Generally, a variety of meat, seafood, curry and veggie options are brought out, but if you are a vegetarian an equal number of different meat-free dishes are provided, so vegetarians don't get penalised. A location in the heart of Theatreland and pre/post theatre menus make it a great bet for those catching a show.
Best bit
The crab cakes and smoky kebabs hit the spot, while the paneer was extremely moreish, especially with the mango chutney. Cocktails are appropriately colourful and lively.
Worst bit
Be careful not to stuff yourself too quickly – it's tempting to cram your face full of these delicious delicacies, but don't, you'll be missing out.
Is it worth my hard-earned cash?
Very good value for money. Dinner per person is £18 with a £12 supplement for the seafood option (we highly recommend it). Pre/post theatre options are £12.50–£14.50.
