Avenue Q

Avenue Q - theatre review

What's the story?

Princeton (a puppet and recent graduate) lands in New York's fictional Avenue Q looking for a cheap flat and his purpose in life. What he encounters is a set of deranged yet lovable neighbours in both puppet and human form.

Who's in it?
Jon Robyns, Simon Lipkin, Giles Terera, Naoko Mori, Clare Foster, Sion Lloyd, Luke Evans, Matthew J Henry, Gloria Onitiri, Jacqui Sanchez , Gabriel Vick and Yanle Zhong.

Who would like this?
Those who watched 'Sesame Street' as a child will squeal with laughter and shock at what happens when the innocent puppets we knew and loved turn into shagging, foul-mouthed adults. Otherwise, anyone who isn't ashamed of a little juvenile humour will heartily enjoy the show.

Will I get it?
'Sesame Street' fans will definitely recognise a few familiar characters, such as Cookie Monster as the constantly masturbating Trekkie Monster, Ernie as Nicky and Bert as the closeted gay Republican investment banker named Rod. As we suspected all along (even as kids), the two men seem to be more than just flatmates. There's also Lucy the Slut, who could either be Miss Piggy after a few cosmos, or a trampy Prairie Dawn.

Best bit
Turning red because seeing simulated, drunken puppet sex in its full glory actually bears an uncanny resemblance to the real thing.

Will I get bored?
With a steady stream of songs such as 'Everyone's a Little Bit Racist','You Can Be as Loud as the Hell You Want (When You're Makin' Love)' and 'The Internet Is for Porn', the show is fast-paced and lively. Between scenes, there are interludes mimicking 'Sesame Street' maths and spelling lessons to great effect. One showed five animated knights on horses disappearing until only one was left standing. 'One night stand!' screamed a bunch of young children as the words flashed up in neon colours on the screen.

Liking...
Claire Foster's utterly believable performances as Lucy the Slut and Kate Monster, the teacher who's the sweet everywoman (even if she is a puppet) looking for love. Naoko Mori from 'Torchwood' also stole the show with her performance as Christmas Eve.

Is it worth my hard earned cash?
'Avenue Q' won a Tony Award for its Broadway production and the London show lives up to the hype. Ticket prices are from £10 - £50, depending on which performance you attend.
