Starring: Jeff Bridges, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Colin Farrell and Robert Duvall
Whats the story? We follow Bad Blake (Jeff Bridges) a down-and-out country singer, who spends all his time at the bottom of a bottle and touring back-end bars. Blake is haunted by loneliness, a string of failed marriages, his alienation from his grown-up son and the success of Tommy Sweet (Colin Farrell), a young country singer he once mentored. While Blakes head is in the clouds, or in the toilet, he meets Jean Craddock (Maggie Gyllenhaal) a newbie reporter whos writing a profile piece about him. The pair instantly hit it off, but can he change his ways in time to change his life?
Best bits: Thanks to some fine acting the film manages to make the age-gap between Blake and Jean so comfortable and believable to the audience. Its no wonder both Bridges and Gyllenhaal landed Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress Oscar nominations. The other big star of the film is its music that teaches us that theres much more to country and western music than line dancing and rootin tootin cowboys.
See it with: Music lovers, Jeff Bridges lovers and old romantics.
